Anomaly Detection for High-Dimensional Data Using Large Deviations Principle

Most current anomaly detection methods suffer from the curse of dimensionality when dealing with high-dimensional data. We propose an anomaly detection algorithm that can scale to high-dimensional data using concepts from the theory of large deviations. The proposed Large Deviations Anomaly Detection (LAD) algorithm is shown to outperform state of art anomaly detection methods on a variety of large and high-dimensional benchmark data sets. Exploiting the ability of the algorithm to scale to high-dimensional data, we propose an online anomaly detection method to identify anomalies in a collection of multivariate time series. We demonstrate the applicability of the online algorithm in identifying counties in the United States with anomalous trends in terms of COVID-19 related cases and deaths. Several of the identified anomalous counties correlate with counties with documented poor response to the COVID pandemic.

Now some of those specs have been confirmed by a new report, and some of the phone's features have been given more detailed descriptions as well. The details on the Moto G6 specs were confirmed by AndroidHeadlines, which was able to see in-house Motorola documentation thanks to a "reliable source." First and foremost, the Moto G6 is said to have three main selling points: display, cameras and battery life. The Moto G6 will reportedly arrive with a 5.7-inch "Max Vision" display that has an 18:9 aspect ratio.


Confirmed: AI Can Predict Heart Attacks and Strokes More Accurately Than Doctors

University of Nottingham researchers created an AI system that scanned routine medical data to predict which patients would have strokes or heart attacks within 10 years. The AI system beat the standard method of prediction, correctly making calls in 355 more cases than traditional means. Predicting cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks is a notoriously challenging task. In fact, the researchers note in their recent paper that around half of all strokes and heart attacks occur in patients who were never identified as being "at risk." The records included a decade of health outcomes, lab data, drug information, hospital records, and demographic information.


Confirmed: Magic Leap acquires 3D division of Dacuda in Zurich

Magic Leap, the augmented reality startup that has raised $1.4 billion in funding but has yet to release a product, has made an acquisition to expand its work in computer vision and deep learning, and to build out its operations into Europe. The company has acquired the 3D division of Dacuda, a computer vision startup based out of Zurich. One of Dacuda's focuses had been developing algorithms for consumer-grade cameras (and not just cameras, but any device with a camera function) to capture 2D and 3D imaging in real-time, "making 3D content as easy as taking a video." Dacuda has confirmed the acquisition with a short announcement on its site. It notes that the whole 3D team has moved to Magic Leap and that Dacuda's founder, Alexander Ilic, is now leading Magic Leap Switzerland.

Microsoft has given a death sentence to "Minecraft Pocket Edition" on Windows Mobile. To be exact, it is terminating support for the mobile game, but it would still be up for grabs from the Microsoft Store. On Wednesday, Windows Central got a tip that "Minecraft Pocket Edition" on Windows Mobile devices will no longer be supported by Microsoft. Upon checking this tidbit, the Windows-focused news site got a confirmation from people familiar with Microsoft's plans for the mobile app that it is really not receiving future updates. The game is currently supported by Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile.

In other words, we're not sure that its product is speedier than traditional, silicon-based machines. In fact, in certain situations, the $15 million D-Wave Two is still no faster than the computer on your desk right now. A research team at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich reports that there is still a lack of definitive evidence that the D-Wave Two can perform functions any faster than traditional machines. The results of the test were published in the journal Science Thursday, though the work of head physicist Matthias Troyer has been widely circulated since January because the paper was available in pre-print.


'Deus Ex: Mankind Divided,' 'Final Fantasy XV' And More Confirmed For PlayStation 4 Pro

Sony has announced the titles that will be coming to its recently announced PlayStation 4 Pro when the new console arrives on the market on Nov. 10. The Japanese multinational conglomerate has also said that the games would come with graphics improvements for the new PlayStation model. Sony revealed two lists of games: one is for the titles that would be enhanced in terms of graphics for the PS4 Pro, while the other is for the video games that would be optimized for the console when they are officially released, as per Game Transfers. For the games that will receive graphics improvements, the list includes: "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided," "Uncharted 4: The Thief Desenlace," "inFamous: Second Son," "inFamous First Light," "Paragon," "Call of Duty: Black Ops III" and "Middle-earth: Shadow of Morder." On the other hand, the list for the upcoming titles for PS4 Pro include: "Final Fantasy XV," "For Honor," "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands," "Watch Dogs 2," "Spider-Man," "Steep," "Dishonored 2, "Rise of the Tomb Raider" and "Killing Floor 2." The second list also mentions "Days Gone," "Farpoint," "Horizon: Zero Dawn," "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered," "FIFA 17," "Battlefield 1" and "Mass Effect Andromeda."


Confirmed: Deep Learning Is Coming to Google Translate Slator

Google confirmed they plan to improve Google Translate's accuracy through artificial intelligence called deep learning. Deep learning is an advanced model of machine learning where an algorithm takes what it has already "learned" (data previously processed) and uses it to form new ways to solve problems in a pattern. Jeff Dean, Google Senior Fellow, confirmed that his team has been working with the Google Translate team to "scale out experiments with translation based on deep learning." Deep learning and technologies derived from it, including deep and recurrent neural nets, are objectively excellent at tackling sequential problems such as speech and image recognition, as long as there is sufficient existing material to train them. On that front, Google Translate's vast data trove of translated material should indeed prove quite useful.
