A Generative Shape Compositional Framework: Towards Representative Populations of Virtual Heart Chimaeras

Generating virtual populations of anatomy that capture sufficient variability while remaining plausible is essential for conducting in-silico trials of medical devices. However, not all anatomical shapes of interest are always available for each individual in a population. Hence, missing/partially-overlapping anatomical information is often available across individuals in a population. We introduce a generative shape model for complex anatomical structures, learnable from datasets of unpaired datasets. The proposed generative model can synthesise complete whole complex shape assemblies coined virtual chimaeras, as opposed to natural human chimaeras. We applied this framework to build virtual chimaeras from databases of whole-heart shape assemblies that each contribute samples for heart substructures. Specifically, we propose a generative shape compositional framework which comprises two components - a part-aware generative shape model which captures the variability in shape observed for each structure of interest in the training population; and a spatial composition network which assembles/composes the structures synthesised by the former into multi-part shape assemblies (viz. virtual chimaeras). We also propose a novel self supervised learning scheme that enables the spatial composition network to be trained with partially overlapping data and weak labels. We trained and validated our approach using shapes of cardiac structures derived from cardiac magnetic resonance images available in the UK Biobank. Our approach significantly outperforms a PCA-based shape model (trained with complete data) in terms of generalisability and specificity. This demonstrates the superiority of the proposed approach as the synthesised cardiac virtual populations are more plausible and capture a greater degree of variability in shape than those generated by the PCA-based shape model.
Cycled Compositional Learning between Images and Text

We present an approach named the Cycled Composition Network that can measure the semantic distance of the composition of image-text embedding. First, the Composition Network transit a reference image to target image in an embedding space using relative caption. Second, the Correction Network calculates a difference between reference and retrieved target images in the embedding space and match it with a relative caption. Our goal is to learn a Composition mapping with the Composition Network. Since this one-way mapping is highly under-constrained, we couple it with an inverse relation learning with the Correction Network and introduce a cycled relation for given Image We participate in Fashion IQ 2020 challenge and have won the first place with the ensemble of our model.
Composition and decomposition of GANs

In this work, we propose a composition/decomposition framework for adversarially training generative models on composed data - data where each sample can be thought of as being constructed from a fixed number of components. In our framework, samples are generated by sampling components from component generators and feeding these components to a composition function which combines them into a "composed sample". This compositional training approach improves the modularity, extensibility and interpretability of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) - providing a principled way to incrementally construct complex models out of simpler component models, and allowing for explicit "division of responsibility" between these components. Using this framework, we define a family of learning tasks and evaluate their feasibility on two datasets in two different data modalities (image and text). Lastly, we derive sufficient conditions such that these compositional generative models are identifiable. Our work provides a principled approach to building on pre-trained generative models or for exploiting the compositional nature of data distributions to train extensible and interpretable models.
