Dakuo Wang
Dakuo Wang is a Research Scientist at IBM Research AI, Cambridge, Massachusetts. His research lies in the intersection between human-computer interaction (HCI) and artificial intelligence (AI). He is now leading a team of researchers, engineers, and designers to conduct research and design user experience for IBM AutoAI, a solution to automate the end-to-end machine learning pipeline. From studying how users work with various AI systems such as automated machine learning (AutoML/AutoAI), chatbots, and clinical decision support systems (CDSS), he proposes "Human-AI Collaboration" as a new framework to examine and design AI systems to work together with humans. Before joining IBM Research, Dakuo Wang got his Ph.D. and M.S. in Information and Computer Science from the University of California Irvine, a Diplôme d'Ingénieur (M.S.) in Information System from École Centrale d'Électronique Paris, and a B.S. in Computer Science from Beijing University of Technology.
US Department Of Transportation Launches Committee On Self-Driving Cars
The U.S. Department of Transportation will launch a federal committee on self-driving cars that includes multiple notable technology executives, according to an announcement on Thursday. Via a statement, the group will regularly meet to discuss various aspects of automated technology and the Department of Transportation's role in setting policy. The committee, which includes leading professionals and experts in their field, will hold its first meeting on January 16th, 2017 to immediately begin work on some of the most pressing and relevant matters facing transportation today, including the development and deployment of automated vehicles, and determining the needs of the Department as it continues with its relevant research, policy, and regulations. The committee will be chaired by Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti and General Motors CEO Mary Barra. Other members include executives and staffers from companies such as Amazon, Lyft and Zipcar.
Machine Learning Thesis Defense Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science
For both humans and machines, understanding the visual world requires relating new percepts with past experience. We argue that a good visual representation for an image should encode what makes it similar to other images, enabling the recall of associated experiences. Current machine implementations of visual representations can capture some aspects of similarity, but fall far short of human ability overall. Even if one explicitly labels objects in millions of images to tell the computer what should be considered similar--a very expensive procedure--the labels still do not capture everything that might be relevant. This thesis shows that one can often train a representation which captures similarity beyond what is labeled in a given dataset.
AI in the News
Recent advances in artificial intelligence, cognitive science, neuroscience and robotics have stimulated the birth and growth of a new research field, known as computational autonomous mental development. Although human mental development is a wellknown subject of study, e.g., in developmental psychology, computational studies of A brief discussion of the subject is available in an article appeared in Science, available electronically at: http://www.cse.msu.edu/dl/SciencePaper.pdf.
