We Can Now Build Autonomous Killing Machines. And That's a Very, Very Bad Idea

Clearpath Robotics was founded six years ago by three college buddies with a passion for building stuff. Its 80 employees specialize in all-terrain test rigs like the Husky, a stout four-wheeled robot vehicle used by researchers within the Department of Defense. They make drones too, and have even built a robotic boat called the Kingfisher. But there is one thing they will never, ever build: a robot that can kill. Clearpath is the first and, so far as we can tell, only robotics company to pledge not to build killer robots.

I really don't know much about this beyond what's in the video, but we don't see a lot of Russian robots around here, so: It looks to be a project from the Russian equivalent of DARPA, designed to go into space by 2021. This video of Agile Justin feeling up different kinds of rods was a finalist for both "IROS Best Paper on Cognitive Robotics" and "IROS Best Student Paper": This is cool because until this point, building pneumatic robots required making molds and casting custom parts.


Clearpath Robotics raises 30 million to become a Tesla for the factory floor

Ontario tech firm Clearpath Robotics has raised 30 million in a Series B round of venture funding to scale up production of its self-driving vehicles. Intsead, Clearpath makes vehicles that autonomously move boxes and pallets around factories, warehouses and distribution centers. Clearpath CEO and co-founder Matt Rendall tells TechCrunch, "Boxes and pallets moving around the world in the global supply chain are the circulatory system for global commerce. We believe if we can move them more efficiently we can do profound things for the economy." Founded in 2008, originally as a computer vision and robotics engineering consultancy, Clearpath today employs 150 full-time in Kitchener.

Self-driving vehicles that can seamlessly shuttle people around cities are years away--perhaps even decades, depending on who is providing the forecast. But the founders of Clearpath Robotics aren't worried. They already have fleets of self-driving vehicles operating on roads with traffic, intersections, and pedestrians. But instead of shuttling people through city streets, the startup's self-driving vehicles navigate goods through the miles of roads inside massive industrial factories, including at Caterpillar cat and GE ge . "Unlike city streets, a factory floor is a controlled environment, which makes it an ideal place to introduce self-driving vehicles at scale," said Clearpath CEO and co-founder Matt Rendall.


Miniaturized Sibling of OTTO Material Handling Robot Joins Clearpath Fleet

Last September, Clearpath Robotics introduced the OTTO 1500, a robotic mover-of-stuff designed to autonomously haul pallets of things weighing up to 1500 kilograms. That's a lot of kilograms, and frankly, it's more kilograms than most people need delivered to them personally at any given time. Today, Clearpath is announcing a bite-sized follow-up to the OTTO 1500, the OTTO 100. It's smaller, more agile, slightly cuter, and with a 100 kg payload, is just the right size to be your new best friend. If you work in a warehouse, that is.
