Google's fix for busted Chromecasts is out now
Google's software fix for older Chromecasts devices that weren't casting is rolling out now, according to an email the company sent to impacted owners. You can view the text of the email in the Google Nest Community pages. If you didn't factory-reset your device, it may already be working. If you're still not able to cast, though, Google recommends rebooting your device and trying again. Any Chromecasts that were accidentally reset to factory settings will need to be reconnected in the latest version of the Google Home app (either version 3.30.106
Google TV Streamer review: A great side piece for your TV, with a dash of smart home chops and (inessential) AI
What we once called the Google Chromecast (and then the Chromecast with Google TV) is now the Google TV Streamer. I won't pretend to understand the reasoning behind any product's rebrand, but at least this one makes a bit of sense. Casting content from elsewhere used to be a big reason TV dongles existed. Today, streaming devices primarily provide the brains required to watch content from Netflix, Disney and other streaming services on almost any screen, and casting is a bit of an afterthought. A name that focuses on Google TV's interface instead of casting seems right in 2024.

The HD Chromecast with Google TV is on sale for only 20
If you watch movies and TV on a 1080p screen, the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) provides a rock-solid streaming experience on the cheap. This is the HD version of Engadget's top choice for streaming devices. Today, Amazon has it for 10 off, letting you pick up the HDR10-capable streaming stick for only 20, nearly a record-low price. If you have a 4K television, you're better off with the more expensive model designed for higher-res displays. But for HD screens, this model is hard to beat. It offers the same terrific user experience as the high-end model, only less expensive and downscaled for 1080p.

Google's big developer conference had a lot to get through. That included the Pixel Fold (more on that below), a new Pixel A-series phone for only $500, a tablet, Android 14, a faster, more sophisticated AI language model, and lots more tricks for AI chatbot Bard. Coming soon, Bard will be able to analyze images and integrate into Google apps, like Gmail and GDocs. And if you haven't dabbled with Bard yet – no more waiting list. And while Google had media and analysts captive, it showed off its holographic meeting experience, Project Starline, two years after it first appeared.

Unsupervised Task Graph Generation from Instructional Video Transcripts
Logeswaran, Lajanugen, Sohn, Sungryull, Jang, Yunseok, Lee, Moontae, Lee, Honglak
This work explores the problem of generating task graphs of real-world activities. Different from prior formulations, we consider a setting where text transcripts of instructional videos performing a real-world activity (e.g., making coffee) are provided and the goal is to identify the key steps relevant to the task as well as the dependency relationship between these key steps. We propose a novel task graph generation approach that combines the reasoning capabilities of instruction-tuned language models along with clustering and ranking components to generate accurate task graphs in a completely unsupervised manner. We show that the proposed approach generates more accurate task graphs compared to a supervised learning approach on tasks from the ProceL and CrossTask datasets.
