British PM Burnham duped by White House impostor

Al Jazeera

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reportedly exchanged messages with someone posing as a senior government official in the United States. The UK leader believed he was speaking to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles in a recent exchange of messages, the Politico news outlet reported on Monday. US authorities have warned in recent months about AI being used to impersonate senior government officials. The contents of the messages remain unclear. Burnham then reportedly became suspicious, cut off communications and informed the relevant authorities.

Geometry of Decision Making in Language Models

Neural Information Processing Systems

Large Language Models (LLMs) show strong generalization across diverse tasks, yet the internal decision-making processes behind their predictions remain opaque. In this work, we study the geometry of hidden representations in LLMs through the lens of intrinsic dimension (ID), focusing specifically on decision-making dynamics in a multiple-choice question answering (MCQA) setting. We perform a large-scale study, with 28 open-weight transformer models and estimate ID across layers using multiple estimators, while also quantifying per-layer performance on MCQA tasks. Our findings reveal a consistent ID pattern across models: early layers operate on low-dimensional manifolds, middle layers expand this space, and later layers compress it again, converging to decision-relevant representations. Together, these results suggest LLMs implicitly learn to project linguistic inputs onto structured, low-dimensional manifolds aligned with task-specific decisions, providing new geometric insights into how generalization and reasoning emerge in language models.

Rethinking the Role of Verbatim Memorization in LLM Privacy

Neural Information Processing Systems

Conventional wisdom in machine learning privacy research states that memorization directly implies a loss of privacy. In contrast, a well-generalized model only remembers distributional patterns and preserves privacy of its training data. In this work, we show that this relationship is much more complex for LLMs trained for chat, and depends heavily on how knowledge is encoded and manipulated. To this end, we fine-tune language models on synthetically generated biographical information including PIIs, and try to extract them in different ways after instruction fine-tuning. We find counter to conventional wisdom that better verbatim memorization does not necessarily increase data leakage via chat. We also find that it is easier to extract information via chat from an LLM that is better able to manipulate and process knowledge even if it is smaller, and that not all attributes are equally extractable. This suggests that the relationship between privacy, memorization and language understanding of LLMs is very intricate, and that examining memorization in isolation can lead to misleading conclusions.

Revealed: Leaked Chats Expose the Daily Life of a Scam Compound's Enslaved Workforce

WIRED

A whistleblower trapped inside a "pig butchering" scam compound gave WIRED a vast trove of its internal materials--including 4,200 pages of messages that lay out its operations in unprecedented detail. Just before 8am one day last April, an office manager who went by the name Amani sent out a motivational message to his colleagues and subordinates. "Every day brings a new opportunity--a chance to connect, to inspire, and to make a difference," he wrote in his 500-word post to an office-wide WhatsApp group. "Talk to that next customer like you're bringing them something valuable--because you are." He and his underlings worked inside a " pig butchering " compound, a criminal operation built to carry out scams --promising romance and riches from crypto investments--that often defraud victims out of hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars at a time. The workers Amani was addressing were eight hours into their 15-hour night shift in a high-rise building in the Golden Triangle special economic zone in Northern Laos. Like their marks, most of them were victims, too: forced laborers trapped in the compound, held in debt bondage with no passports. They struggled to meet scam revenue quotas to avoid fines that deepened their debt.

Roblox's AI-Powered Age Verification Is a Complete Mess

WIRED

Roblox's AI-Powered Age Verification Is a Complete Mess Kids are being identified as adults--and vice versa--on Roblox, while age-verified accounts are already being sold online. Just days after launching, Roblox's much-hyped AI-powered age verification system is a complete mess. Roblox's face scanning system, which estimates peoples' ages before they can access the platform's chat functions, rolled out in the US and other countries around the world last week, after initially launching in a few locations in December. Roblox says it is implementing the system to allow users to safely chat with users of similar ages. But players are already in revolt because they can no longer chat to their friends, developers are demanding Roblox roll back the update, and crucially, experts say that not only is the AI mis-aging young players as adults and vice versa, the system does little to help address the problem it was designed to tackle: the flood of predators using the platform to groom young children.

You can finally chat with Amazon's AI-enhanced Alexa on the web

PCWorld

Amazon has launched a web portal for Alexa+ at Alexa.com, providing early access users with a ChatGPT-like interface featuring suggested prompts and easy text copying capabilities. PCWorld reports the portal allows file uploads for document analysis and offers improved usability compared to previous voice-only interactions with Amazon's AI assistant. Alexa+ remains free during early access, with future plans to offer it free to Prime members while charging non-Prime users a monthly fee. It's been nearly a year since Amazon first launched the new, AI-enhanced Alexa+, but until now, a key feature has been missing: the ability to access and chat with Alexa+ on the web. Now it appears Amazon has fulfilled that promise, with an Alexa+ web portal finally going live--for at least some Alexa+ early access users, anyway--at Alexa.com.
