European Leadership in Process Management

Communications of the ACM

In the mid-1990s, many vendors, such as IBM, Staffware, Filenet, Lotus, and Xerox, provided workflow management (WFM) software. In fact, WFM systems were expected to become an integral part of every information system. Despite these high expectations, only a few organizations successfully used this technology. After the limited success of WFM systems, the scope was broadened beyond automation, leading to a wave of business process management (BPM) systems.1,7 Many organizations documented their processes using notations such as the business process model notation (BPMN), but few successfully used BPM technologies to create information systems driven by process models.8 One of the main reasons was because traditional process management approaches underestimated the complexity and variability of real-world processes and did not explicitly use the data available in existing enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management (CRM) systems.

Red Hat and Celonis Make Hybrid Multicloud a Reality for Intelligent Business Execution

#artificialintelligence

Red Hat, IBM and Celonis announced the general availability of Celonis Execution Management System (EMS) on Red Hat OpenShift Service on Amazon Web Services (AWS) (ROSA) as a managed cloud service. This enables organizations to take full advantage of the collaboration and unique expertise of each company in a multicloud environment. AWS is the first public cloud platform to offer Celonis EMS on Red Hat OpenShift, with Red Hat's support for other public clouds planned in the near future, including Google Cloud Platform, IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure. In April 2021, the three companies strategically partnered to accelerate how global organizations drive business execution through process mining, data intelligence and systems automation. Despite trillions of dollars invested in digital transformation, from next-generation applications to cloud-based systems, organizations still struggle to realize full business potential due to process inefficiencies and gaps, siloed data and an overall expansion in IT complexity.

How automation is transforming mining's efficiency

#artificialintelligence

Mining is a traditionally analogue business. After all, the industry's symbol worldwide is a hammer and pick. Yet, despite the sector's antiquated reputation, some major mining companies are taking a progressive stance and proving digitisation and automation can achieve much better operational outcomes. Known as Mine 4.0, the industry is seeing digital transformation creep into everything from trucks, drills and trains to back-office processes, such as procurement and supply chain logistics. Miners have very little control over the revenue side of their business, as the global commodities crash of 2014 to 2015, when prices plunged by more than 30 per cent, and indeed the coronavirus epidemic demonstrate.
