Arabic encompasses a diverse array of for a select few languages. This bias towards linguistic varieties, many of which are nearly mutually resource-rich languages leaves behind the majority unintelligible (Watson, 2007; Abdul-Mageed of the world's languages (Bartelds et al., 2023; et al., 2024). This diversity includes three primary Talafha et al., 2023; Meelen et al., 2024; Tonja categories: Classical Arabic, historically used in et al., 2024). In this work, we report our efforts literature and still employed in religious contexts; to alleviate this challenge for Arabic--a collection Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), used in media, of languages and dialects spoken by more than education, and governmental settings; and numerous 450 million people. We detail a year-long community colloquial dialects, which are the main forms effort to collect and annotate a novel dataset of daily communication across the Arab world and for eight Arabic dialects spanning both Africa and often involve code-switching (Abdul-Mageed et al., Asia. This new dataset, dubbed Casablanca, is rich 2020; Mubarak et al., 2021).

Screenwriters: How to use ChatGPT to Cause Trouble

#artificialintelligence

Select somebody's not-too-recent and excellent screenplay PDF you love. Check it has a proper synopsis in Wikipedia. Decide a new title, location, and a new bunch of characters (where they're from, their genders, etc). For example, CASABLANCA set in Futuristic Shanghai. Say to ChatGPT something like "Re-write the following story but set in your setting and with the main character etc etc", then afterward copy the Wikipeda synopsis in.

Machine Learning Communities: Q1 '22 highlights and achievements

#artificialintelligence

Let's explore highlights and accomplishments of vast Google Machine Learning communities over the first quarter of the year! We are enthusiastic and grateful about all the activities that the communities across the globe do. ML Olympiad is an associated Kaggle Community Competitions hosted by Machine Learning Google Developers Experts (ML GDEs) or TensorFlow User Groups (TFUGs) sponsored by Google. The first round was hosted from January to March, suggesting solving critical problems of our time. Competition highlights include Autism Prediction Challenge, Arabic_Poems, Hausa Sentiment Analysis, Quality Education, Good Health and Well Being.

Pattern Recognition in Narrative: Tracking Emotional Expression in Context

Murtagh, Fionn, Ganz, Adam

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Using geometric data analysis, our objective is the analysis of narrative, with narrative of emotion being the focus in this work. The following two principles for analysis of emotion inform our work. Firstly, emotion is revealed not as a quality in its own right but rather through interaction. We study the 2-way relationship of Ilsa and Rick in the movie Casablanca, and the 3-way relationship of Emma, Charles and Rodolphe in the novel {\em Madame Bovary}. Secondly, emotion, that is expression of states of mind of subjects, is formed and evolves within the narrative that expresses external events and (personal, social, physical) context. In addition to the analysis methodology with key aspects that are innovative, the input data used is crucial. We use, firstly, dialogue, and secondly, broad and general description that incorporates dialogue. In a follow-on study, we apply our unsupervised narrative mapping to data streams with very low emotional expression. We map the narrative of Twitter streams. Thus we demonstrate map analysis of general narratives.

The Correspondence Analysis Platform for Uncovering Deep Structure in Data and Information

Murtagh, Fionn

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We study two aspects of information semantics: (i) the collection of all relationships, (ii) tracking and spotting anomaly and change. The first is implemented by endowing all relevant information spaces with a Euclidean metric in a common projected space. The second is modelled by an induced ultrametric. A very general way to achieve a Euclidean embedding of different information spaces based on cross-tabulation counts (and from other input data formats) is provided by Correspondence Analysis. From there, the induced ultrametric that we are particularly interested in takes a sequential - e.g. temporal - ordering of the data into account. We employ such a perspective to look at narrative, "the flow of thought and the flow of language" (Chafe). In application to policy decision making, we show how we can focus analysis in a small number of dimensions.

The Structure of Narrative: the Case of Film Scripts

Murtagh, Fionn, Ganz, Adam, McKie, Stewart

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We analyze the style and structure of story narrative using the case of film scripts. The practical importance of this is noted, especially the need to have support tools for television movie writing. We use the Casablanca film script, and scripts from six episodes of CSI (Crime Scene Investigation). For analysis of style and structure, we quantify various central perspectives discussed in McKee's book, "Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting". Film scripts offer a useful point of departure for exploration of the analysis of more general narratives. Our methodology, using Correspondence Analysis, and hierarchical clustering, is innovative in a range of areas that we discuss. In particular this work is groundbreaking in taking the qualitative analysis of McKee and grounding this analysis in a quantitative and algorithmic framework.
