Faisal Islam: Global disruption looms large over biggest-ever Davos
Apart from the snow and the temperature Greenland does not have much in common with the Swiss alps. But the fight for the future of the island looms over the gathering of world leaders and businesses at the World Economic Forum (WEF) this week. Indeed the timing of Donald Trump's extraordinary threat must have had in mind this meeting. And that is beyond strange given the views of his base. Last year, he beamed himself into the WEF from the White House, appearing before an audience of largely bewildered European executives just two days after his inauguration.

Canada's Carney meets Zelenskyy, backs security guarantees for Ukraine
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed support for Ukraine's calls for security guarantees as part of any peace deal with Russia, including the possibility of deploying troops to the Eastern European country. During a visit to Kyiv, where he met Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, Carney said a group of Ukraine's Western allies, known as the Coalition of the Willing, is working with the United States to bolster Ukrainian defences. "In Canada's judgment, it is not realistic that the only security guarantee could be the strength of the Ukrainian Armed Forces … that needs to be buttressed and reinforced," Carney told reporters. "We are working through – with our allies in Coalition of the Willing and with Ukraine – the modalities of those security guarantees on land, in the air and the sea, and I would not exclude the presence of troops." Three and a half years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, US President Donald Trump is leading efforts to end the war.

AI floods Amazon with strange political books before Canadian election
Canada has seen a boom in political books created with generative artificial intelligence, adding to concerns about how new technologies are affecting the information voters receive during the election campaign. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was the subject of at least 16 books published in March and listed on Amazon, according to a review of the site on April 16. Five of those were published on a single day. In total, some 30 titles were published about Carney this year and made available on Amazon -- but most were taken down from the site after inquiries were made.

Combating patient loneliness through conversational AI
With disinformation and confusion about COVID-19 on the rise, effective patient engagement is taking on an even greater role. Studies have shown that engaged patients show improved health outcomes and that effective tools can enhance service delivery. Communicating with impact is the real key – and innovators and vendors are exploring the best ways to do so. Two such teams are mPulse Mobile and Magellan Rx Management, which recently collaborated to address social isolation and loneliness in nearly 1,800 people with chronic and specialty conditions across the United States. By using mPulse's conversational artificial intelligence platform, the companies say they were able to conduct dialogues via text messages with participants on a variety of health-related topics during a 45-day period.

AI can shine digital sunlight on to company greenwashing
If you say the word "green activist" to a corporate executive, Greta Thunberg may spring to mind -- and provoke fear. Today, however, there is another force to watch: robots. Consider an artificial intelligence-enabled platform called "ClimateBert". This was recently created by Swiss and German academics to parse the accounts of 800 businesses backing the "task force for climate related financial disclosure", principles pioneered by Mark Carney, former Bank of England governor. It sounds (and is) geeky.

NBA using artificial intelligence for highlight clips this All-Star game
As the thousands of high-flying dunks, alley oops and fadeaway jumper clips come out of NBA All-Star weekend, chances are the highlights were created by artificial intelligence. The league says they are using machine learning to create more highlights than ever before this All-Star weekend. Since 2014, the NBA has been employing and experimenting with technology from an Israeli company called WSC Sports to analyze key moments of each game and spit out some of the best highlights. As social media has emerged as an important destination to reach fans, the need for more and customized highlights has grown. This All-Star weekend, the software will automatically create multiple clips and content for every single player.

Climate Change and Artificial Intelligence as Investment Mega-Trends
A report from CREATE in collaboration with BNY Mellon looks at two related megatrends in investing--climate change and artificial intelligence. It asks in each case: how is this trend perceived in terms of opportunities and risks? What are the specific investment issues involved or solutions likely to be adopted? And how are the asset allocation approaches changing? Professor Amin Rajan wrote the report, titled "Future 2024," and based it largely on interviews with senior asset allocators from around the world.

Alan Turing to feature on new £50 note
Alan Turing, the scientist known for helping crack the Enigma code during the second world war and pioneering the modern computer, has been chosen to appear on the new £50 note. The mathematician was selected from a list of almost 1,000 scientists in a decision that recognised both his role in fending off the threat of German U-boats in the Battle of the Atlantic and the impact of his postwar persecution for homosexuality. The announcement by the Bank of England governor, Mark Carney, completes the official rehabilitation of Turing, who played a pivotal role at the Bletchley Park code and cipher centre. William Shakespeare was the first historical character to appear on a Bank of England note in 1970. Here's the full list of the historical characters that have appeared on banknotes issued by the central bank in England and Wales over the last five decades.

To Design Great A.I., Get 'Covered in Blood'
The key to successfully applying artificial intelligence in the real world is to get up close and personal with the people who'll to use it, executives agreed during a roundtable discussion about A.I. during Fortune's Brainstorm Design conference in Singapore last Thursday. "The reason we all wear black shirts, by the way, is that you can't see the blood splatters on them, because we need to be so close to the action that we're getting covered in blood," said Sean Carney with a smile. Carney, who indeed was wearing a black dress shirt, is chief design officer for Philips, which claims substantial market share for A.I.-driven healthcare tools. Many clinicians worry that new technologies will put them out of a job. It's the wrong mindset, Carney said.

The world, in both a business and personal setting, continues to be disrupted by digital trends that are driving innovation across industries and sectors. Digital trends continue to create richer, more personal customer relationships, while enhancing operations and processes across the board. These trends are ultimately helping organisations reimagine their capabilities and stave off elimination in the era of disruption. Information Age asked ten experts for their views on what are some of the key current digital trends, and how they will shape future endeavours. Chris Dixon, technical consultant at Axians UK, explains the benefits that 5G will bring in an increasingly connected era.
