Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of several disruptive technologies that consumer products' companies can deploy to further advance their journey to digital maturity. AI technologies "perform and/or augment tasks, help better inform decisions, and accomplish objectives that have traditionally required human intelligence, such as planning and reasoning from partial or uncertain information and learning."1 As such, AI technologies can potentially strengthen a company's competitive advantage in the marketplace and enhance the customer experience. Figure 1 explores several potential use cases of AI that are applicable to the consumer products industry. They are arranged based on the main categories associated with cognitive technologies: robotic process automation, language technologies, machine learning, and computer vision.

Carlsberg turns to AI for brewing help

Since we've sequenced the human genome and created a tool that can edit it, the logical next step is Carlsberg's Beer Fingerprinting Project, which uses machine learning to predict a beer's taste profile -- bitter, sweet, toasty, and so on. The big picture: Brewing is chemistry, and computer-assisted analysis can help fine-tune recipes or processes that can make a lot of money for beer companies. It was only a matter of time before AI snuck into the brewery.

Brewers are using AI to predict how your next beer will taste. Carlsberg is using artificial intelligence to make naturally tasty beer even better. Researchers at the Danish company, one of the largest brewers in the world, are using advanced sensors and analytics to map out and predict flavors more quickly. Their AI project was outlined Monday in a blog post by Microsoft, which is providing the company with cloud services. The goal of the delicious-sounding AI project: To create a catalogue flavors for each sample.

The Carlsberg Research Laboratory in Denmark creates 1,000 different beer samples, daily. With such a strong focus on research, it's no surprise that Carlsberg is looking towards the future, and the opportunities that technology can provide. The company's new multi-million research study, enticingly named The Beer Fingerprinting Project, looks set to change the way how new beers are created and enjoyed – and it's all thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI). Intelligent beer The brainchild of Jochen Förster, Director and Professor Yeast Fermentation, Carlsberg Group, the aim of the pioneering project is to use a series of high-tech sensors which can accurately guage the delicate nuances and aromas in the beer, mapping out a'flavour fingerprint' for each individual sample. Information gained from this system can then be used to explore new brewing organisms, ultimately leading to the creation of new beers.
