I used a sinister AI bot to go on dates with six SERIAL KILLERS including Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy
For all the ways that AI might have transformed the world, I doubt many people expected flirty serial killer chatbots to be part of it. Yet on the seedier corners of the internet, there are scores of AIs built specifically to give some most vicious killers in history a romantic twist. To see just how dark these bots could be, I decided to step up for a spot of serial killer speed dating. I went on six'dates' with some of history's most notorious murderers and, perhaps unsurprisingly, it didn't go great. Character.ai is the subject of a lawsuit alleging that its bots drove a 14-year-old boy to take his life and has been used to host ghoulish replicas of murder victims such as Brianna Ghey. Across my six dates on the site, I found myself threatened with violence, stalked, invited to remote locations, and generally met with some extraordinarily uncomfortable flirting.

Deep Algorithmic Question Answering: Towards a Compositionally Hybrid AI for Algorithmic Reasoning
An important aspect of artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability to reason in a step-by-step "algorithmic" manner that can be inspected and verified for its correctness. This is especially important in the domain of question answering (QA). We argue that the challenge of algorithmic reasoning in QA can be effectively tackled with a "systems" approach to AI which features a hybrid use of symbolic and sub-symbolic methods including deep neural networks. Additionally, we argue that while neural network models with end-to-end training pipelines perform well in narrow applications such as image classification and language modelling, they cannot, on their own, successfully perform algorithmic reasoning, especially if the task spans multiple domains. We discuss a few notable exceptions and point out how they are still limited when the QA problem is widened to include other intelligence-requiring tasks. However, deep learning, and machine learning in general, do play important roles as components in the reasoning process. We propose an approach to algorithm reasoning for QA, Deep Algorithmic Question Answering (DAQA), based on three desirable properties: interpretability, generalizability and robustness which such an AI system should possess and conclude that they are best achieved with a combination of hybrid and compositional AI.

Adventures in Mathematical Reasoning
"Mathematics is not a careful march down a well-cleared highway, but a journey into a strange wilderness, where the explorers often get lost. Rigour should be a signal to the historian that the maps have been made, and the real explorers have gone elsewhere." W.S. Anglin, the Mathematical Intelligencer, 4 (4), 1982.

Five of the scariest predictions about artificial intelligence
A common fear among analysts, and indeed workers, is the likelihood that AI will result in mass global unemployment as jobs increasingly become automated and human labor is no longer required. "Job losses are probably the biggest worry," said Alan Bundy, a professor at the University of Edinburgh's school of informatics. According to Bundy, job losses are the primary reason for the rise of populism around the world -- he cites the election of President Donald Trump and the U.K.'s decision to withdraw from the European Union as examples. "There will be a need for humans to orchestrate a collection of narrow-focused apps, and to spot the edge cases that none of them can deal with, but this will not replace the expected mass unemployment -- at least not for a very long time," he added. Proponents of AI say that the technology will lead to the creation of new kinds of jobs.
Oregon sheriff describes takeover of wildlife refuge as far from peaceful
The takeover of a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon by anti-government protesters wasn't violent, a county sheriff testified, but it was far from peaceful. "Certainly it's not normal to have a hundred people walking around with firearms on our streets," Harney County Sheriff Dave Ward said Wednesday, becoming the first witness to testify in the trial of Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan and five others charged with conspiracy in the 41-day takeover of a federal wildlife preserve in southeast Oregon. Ward testified in the federal courthouse here that features a wall engraved with a quote from Thomas Jefferson: "The boisterous sea of liberty is never without a wave." The sheriff told the jury how such a wave, ridden by Ammon Bundy and his supporters, came crashing down on Harney County early this year. On Jan. 2, Ward was watching what he thought was a live TV feed of a Bundy-led rally just three blocks from his office in Burns.
