Detecting and Mitigating DDoS Attacks with AI: A Survey
Apostu, Alexandru, Gheorghe, Silviu, Hîji, Andrei, Cleju, Nicolae, Pătraşcu, Andrei, Rusu, Cristian, Ionescu, Radu, Irofti, Paul
Distributed Denial of Service attacks represent an active cybersecurity research problem. Recent research shifted from static rule-based defenses towards AI-based detection and mitigation. This comprehensive survey covers several key topics. Preeminently, state-of-the-art AI detection methods are discussed. An in-depth taxonomy based on manual expert hierarchies and an AI-generated dendrogram are provided, thus settling DDoS categorization ambiguities. An important discussion on available datasets follows, covering data format options and their role in training AI detection methods together with adversarial training and examples augmentation. Beyond detection, AI based mitigation techniques are surveyed as well. Finally, multiple open research directions are proposed.

Nerves, apathy as Russia's war shakes Romanian towns near Ukraine
Bucharest, Romania – Last Wednesday, a Russian drone attack on Ukraine's grain port infrastructure shook Romania, a NATO member. The force of the attack on the Izmail port, across the Danube River from the Eastern European nation, was so intense that the windows of some village homes in southeastern Romania shattered. Even though she lives far from the county of Tulcea, where the impact was felt, 28-year-old Alexandra, a paralegal from the capital Bucharest, is concerned. "We share a border with Ukraine and the conflict could expand at any moment," she told Al Jazeera. Russia has launched several attacks on Danube ports since pulling out of the wartime Black Sea grain deal.

To make its first appearance at the Spotlight festival, a memorable one, Humans.ai More precisely, a video mapping installation on a large-scale sculpture depicting the iconic Humans Head, the protagonist in the company's NFT collection that symbolizes the symbiosis between humans and artificial intelligence. Tens of thousands of tourists and Bucharest residents were in awe of the light show and the vibrant energy emanated by the video projection made by the Humans.ai Though, the real piece de la resistance was DIANA, our synthetic avatar capable of speaking every language of the European Union.
Solidus AITECH: The World's First Artificial Intelligence Utility Token
A significant problem is the lack of European HPC facilities in the global top 10. European scientists and engineers rely on expensive U.S. supercomputing facilities more than those in the EU by a factor of 10. At Solidus AITECH, we have completed the main build of our data centre and are ready to commence the installation of our HPC infrastructure which is based in Europe (Bucharest), which will significantly help to bridge this gap and will enable European companies to obtain their supercomputing power within the EU. We expect this facility to be more efficient and of lower cost than in most of the U.S. By operating in Bucharest, we have the benefit of low-cost electricity and fast internet speeds as well as our Intellectual Property (IP) and expect to run at around 40% less power consumption than the industry average. We have the capacity to scale up our operations and, as we do so, we expect to quickly become the top EU HPC centre and in the global top 10 HPC centres.

Disinfection robots and thermal body cameras: welcome to the Covid-free office
Not so long ago it may have seemed more like a futuristic vision of the workplace – or a hospital. But the hands-free door handles, self-cleaning surfaces, antimicrobial paint, air-monitoring display tools, UV light disinfection robots, and 135 other measures at an office block in Bucharest are here to stay, say the creators behind what they are touting as one of the world's most virus-resilient workplaces, which they hope will become the new normal in office design. Entering H3, a five-storey building in a western neighbourhood of the Romanian capital, is like learning the steps to a new dance. A flick of the wrist opens the door, and a red line marks the spot at which to stand from where a thermal body camera 2 metres away scans arrivals for signs of fever. Those who are "green-lighted" can follow the tracks to the self-clean lift, step on one of two foot pads and be transported through the building, safe in the knowledge that a UV lighting disinfection system installed in the ventilation shafts is keeping them infection-free between floors. Anyone whose head flashes red on the screen, however, is whisked away by a plastic-gloved "immune steward" into a nearby quarantine room: a glass box with a panic button and its own internal ventilation system shut off from the rest of the building.

EUROLAN, which has been held biennially since 1993, is one of the most significant European summer schools in the area of natural language processing. Each of the EUROLAN sessions has focused on an area of timely interest to researchers in the field; this year's EU-ROLAN involved students in tutorials and hands-on sessions concerned with semantic web technologies as applied to language processing, ontology creation and use, and consideration of the semantic web's potential and limitations. This year's school was organized by the Faculty of Computer Science at the A. I. Cuza University of Iasi, the Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence at the Romanian Academy in Bucharest, and the Department of Computer Science at Vassar College. It was the most successful in its 10-year history, with 119 registered participants from 23 countries. Hosted by the Romanian Academy, the most prestigious cultural and scientific institution in the country, the event was given significant attention in the media.
