Higgs Boson breakthrough was UK triumph, but British physics faces 'catastrophic' cuts
Higgs Boson breakthrough was UK triumph, but British physics faces'catastrophic' cuts When the Nobel Prize in Physics was announced in Stockholm in October 2013, the world was watching. Among the names read out was Prof Peter Higgs, the British theorist who, nearly half a century earlier, had predicted the existence of a particle believed to hold the cosmos together - the Higgs boson. The announcement, broadcast live from Sweden, was what many scientists had hoped for since a year earlier, when experiments at CERN had finally confirmed Higgs's theory by discovering the Higgs boson - hailed as one of the biggest discoveries in a generation. At the time Higgs, who has since passed away, said in a statement: I hope this recognition of fundamental science will help raise awareness of the value of blue-sky research. Blue-sky research asks questions to understand the universe, rather than design new products.

Immature men are to blame for Britain's'missing babies', report warns - because they delay responsibilities until later in life Britain's'missing babies' can be blamed on immature men who are delaying responsibilities until later in life, according to a report. Research from the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) think tank predicts around 600,000 young women may miss out on motherhood partly because men don't feel ready for children until they get older. In the report, called Baby Bust, the organisation says there are a range of reasons for falling birth rates including the cost of childcare, wanting to move into a larger house, prioritising a career or not finding the right partner.

15 enchanting images from the 2026 British Wildlife Photography Awards
It was an exciting start to my early morning when I was able to witness the agility and effort of a pair of hares boxing. They were so close that I could hear the puffs and pants as they performed in front of me. As the activity became more intense, fur was lost, and I loved how it stayed on top of the hare's head throughout this frenetic time. So intent were they to win the battle of wills they ignored my presence lying on the ground in plain sight. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week.
The best new science fiction books of March 2026
The latest in Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time series is out this month, along with a speculative retelling of Moby-Dick and a forgotten classic from 1936 March is lining up to be packed with treats for science fiction fans. For starters, we get to return to the universe of Adrian Tchaikovsky's series, this time in the company of a huge mantis shrimp. We're also being offered a take on, set in space, and what sounds like a must-read: a forgotten speculative novel from 1936, which imagines the last woman left alive in Britain after a pandemic. If instead you're after a cosy sci-fi mystery, a slice of horror or a mission to Europa, then you're in luck, because all of those are on offer too. The latest in Tchaikovsky's excellent series is due to hit our shelves this month, and according to our sci-fi reviewer Emily H. Wilson, it is brilliant.

Trump's new world order has become real and Europe is having to adjust fast
Trump's new world order has become real and Europe is having to adjust fast Downtown Munich is best-known for chic shops and flashy fast cars but right now its streets are bedecked with posters advertising next generation drones. Europe's security under construction boasts the slogan on an eye-catching set of sleek black-and-white photographs, festooned across a scaffolding-clad church on one of this town's best known pedestrian boulevards. Such an unapologetic public display of military muscle would have been unimaginable here just a few years ago, but the world outside Germany is changing fast, and taking this country with it. The southern region of Bavaria has become Germany's leading defence technology hub, focusing on AI, drones and aerospace. People here, like most other Europeans, say they feel increasingly exposed - squeezed between an expansionist Russia and an economically aggressive China to the east, and an increasingly unpredictable, former best pal, the United States, to the west.

Rare copy of Declaration of Independence going to auction
Only around 175 broadsides copies of the document are believed to exist. Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. The Declaration of Independence is up for sale, but it will cost more than most of us can afford. Despite this, the edition offered by Goldin Auction originally printed and distributed so that colonists could read the Second Continental Congress' argument for separating from Great Britain in July 1776. The document is part of a collection of over 400 historic items scheduled for auction in May, and is set to coincide with the 250th anniversary of American independence .
