A new study has warned that Saharan dust has driven up pollution in the UK by 50 per cent over the last decade. Scientists from the Paul Scherrer Institute used AI to analyse the desert dust in the air over Europe. The results showed that dust concentrations have increased consistently across much of the continent between 2012 and 2021. Here in the UK, concentrations increased by at least 50 per cent over this time period. This dust travels to the UK all the way from the Sahara, and can have wide-reaching consequences.

The government has published its long-delayed defence investment plan (DIP) that outlines how much money it will spend on the UK's armed forces. An additional £15bn will go on defence - a total of £270bn over the next four years - and will include spending on the nuclear deterrent and new combat aircraft. But the extra money is less than the £28bn reportedly sought by defence chiefs, and both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have criticised the plan as underfunded.
