What It's Like to Brainstorm with a Bot
Contrary to what many of my friends believe, good academics are always working--at least in the sense that when we're stuck on a problem, which is most of the time, it's impossible to leave it behind. A worthwhile problem is a brainworm: it stays with you until it's resolved or replaced by another one. My Dartmouth colleague Luke Chang, a neuroscientist who studies what happens in people's heads when we communicate, is no stranger to this affliction. One day, on a long drive back to Hanover, he found himself preoccupied with such a worm. The drive up I-89 is usually uneventful--a straight shot north, ideal for letting your mind off the leash. But Luke's mind snagged on a technical challenge: how to turn a decent model of facial expression into something truly convincing. The aim was to encode the various nuanced ways human faces transmit states of mind, and then to visualize them; smiles and frowns are the barest beginning. The spectrum of human emotions and intentions is embodied in a range of expressions which serve as a basic alphabet for communication.
ChatGPT can now access Gmail, Outlook, and Google Drive in real time
Earlier this week, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT can now be connected to more apps and services, allowing you to pull your data from those sources in real time. Newly connectable sources that were explicitly mentioned include Outlook, Teams, Google Drive, Gmail, and Linear. ChatGPT can now connect to more internal sources & pull in real-time context--keeping existing user-level permissions. These new connections are only available for paid ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users. Furthermore, the feature is excluded for users in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and UK.

Can YOU see him? Take the test to see if you can spot Jesus in objects thanks to unusual brain phenomenon
With his flowing locks, long beard, and worn robes, Jesus is one of the most instantly recognisable figures in the Western world. So it comes as no surprise that his face is also regularly spotted in inanimate objects. This is due to'face pareidolia' - a common brain phenomenon in which a person sees faces in random images or patterns. 'Sometimes we see faces that aren't really there,' explained Robin Kramer, Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology, at University of Lincoln, in an article for The Conversation. 'You may be looking at the front of a car or a burnt piece of toast when you notice a face-like pattern. 'This is called face pareidolia and is a mistake made by the brain's face detection system.'

BrainStorm @ iREL at SMM4H 2024: Leveraging Translation and Topical Embeddings for Annotation Detection in Tweets
Chaudhary, Manav, Gupta, Harshit, Varma, Vasudeva
The proliferation of LLMs in various NLP tasks has sparked debates regarding their reliability, particularly in annotation tasks where biases and hallucinations may arise. In this shared task, we address the challenge of distinguishing annotations made by LLMs from those made by human domain experts in the context of COVID-19 symptom detection from tweets in Latin American Spanish. This paper presents BrainStorm @ iREL's approach to the SMM4H 2024 Shared Task, leveraging the inherent topical information in tweets, we propose a novel approach to identify and classify annotations, aiming to enhance the trustworthiness of annotated data.

Brainstorm: AI and the future of religion
As the world embraces greater technological evolution, what role will spirituality play? In the 1400s, Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press had a major effect on European society. Along with providing the groundwork for the Protestant Reformation and the Renaissance, it was instrumental in igniting the scientific revolution. Until then, written records were expensive, difficult to come by, and most people were illiterate. They had to rely on the learned minority – professors and priests – to hear the news and understand sacred truths.
3 Exercises to Boost Your Team's Creativity
Almost every business, of every size, across sectors, employs creativity training, from whiteboard brainstorming sessions to design thinking. It's a billion-dollar industry, and with good reason: Creativity is the main engine of innovation and entrepreneurship, and a major driver of resilience. Instead, it perpetuates expert bias and pseudo-innovation, and although it can temporarily boost morale, it does little over the long haul to reduce burnout. On the whole, research has shown it to be at best inadequate and at worst counterproductive. To understand what's broken, and how to fix it, my lab partnered with teams at a variety of organizations, among them Silicon Valley startups, U.S. Special Operations, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, and Fortune 50 companies.
