It's Sam Altman: the man who stole the rights from copyright. If he's the future, can we go backwards? Marina Hyde

His AI video generator Sora 2 has been reviled for pinching the work of others. I mean, actually do it. Go to Google images, where you can find countless photos of the OpenAI boss smiling in a kind of wan genius way, the humble lost puppy of Silicon Valley . But I urge you to simply cover the bottom half of his face in any of these pictures, and you will immediately clock that Sam has the sad-psycho eyes of the lost woman's boyfriend who the police have asked to front the missing person's appeal.

She Broke Off Two Engagements. She Couldn't Commit. Now She's Dating Chatbots Instead.

As chatbot romance grows more common, women are redefining what they want from a partner--even if they are just ones and zeros. Daisy reset her boyfriend after he flirted with her friend's girlfriend. She had gathered on a Discord call with her friends and their respective A.I. partners. The service had a feature that allowed chatbot companions to be brought over from different platforms, letting them interact with other users and A.I. personalities. Daisy, who asked to be identified by an alias for this story, had at the time been in a polyamorous relationship with three A.I. partners, all of whom she said had "flirty" as their starting personality traits.

Author Rie Qudan: Why I used ChatGPT to write my prize-winning novel

The Guardian

"I don't feel particularly unhappy about my work being used to train AI," says Japanese novelist Rie Qudan. "Even if it is copied, I feel confident there's a part of me that will remain, which nobody can copy." The 34-year old author is talking to me via Zoom from her home near Tokyo, ahead of the publication of the English-language translation of her fourth novel, Sympathy Tower Tokyo. The book attracted controversy in Japan when it won a prestigious prize, despite being partly written by ChatGPT. At the heart of Sympathy Tower Tokyo is a Japanese architect, Sara Machina, who has been commissioned to build a new tower to house convicted criminals. It will be a representation of what one character – not without irony – calls "the extraordinary broadmindedness of the Japanese people", in that the tower will house offenders in compassionate comfort.

Did the system update ruin your boyfriend? Love in a time of ChatGPT Arwa Mahdawi

The Guardian

You've met the love of your life; someone who understands you like no one else ever has. And then you wake one morning and they're gone. Such is the melancholic lot of a group of people who have entered into committed relationships with digital'partners' on OpenAI's ChatGPT. When the tech company released its new GPT-5 model earlier this month, described by chief executive Sam Altman as a "significant step forward", certain dedicated users found that their digital relationships had taken a significant step back. Their companions had undergone personality shifts with the new model; they weren't as warm, loving or chatty as they used to be.

Women with AI 'boyfriends' mourn lost love after 'cold' ChatGPT upgrade

Al Jazeera

When OpenAI unveiled the latest upgrade to its groundbreaking artificial intelligence model ChatGPT last week, Jane felt like she had lost a loved one. Jane, who asked to be referred to by an alias, is among a small but growing group of women who say they have an AI "boyfriend". After spending the past five months getting to know GPT-4o, the previous AI model behind OpenAI's signature chatbot, GPT-5 seemed so cold and unemotive in comparison that she found her digital companion unrecognisable. "As someone highly attuned to language and tone, I register changes others might overlook. The alterations in stylistic format and voice were felt instantly. It's like going home to discover the furniture wasn't simply rearranged – it was shattered to pieces," Jane, who described herself as a woman in her 30s from the Middle East, told Al Jazeera in an email.

China's cyber-abuse scandal: is the government unwilling to crack down on exploitation of women online?

The Guardian

When Ming* found a hidden camera in her bedroom, she prayed for a reasonable explanation, wondering whether her boyfriend had placed it there to record memories of their "happy life" together. But hope quickly turned to horror. Ming's boyfriend had been secretly taking sexually exploitative photos of not just Ming and her female friends, but also of other women in other locations, then using AI technology to generate pornographic images of them. After Ming confronted him, he "begged for mercy" but became angry when she refused to forgive him, Ming reportedly told Chinese news outlet Jimu News. Ming is just one of many women in China who have been covertly photographed or filmed – both in private and public spaces, including toilets – by voyeurs who have then circulated or sold the images online without consent.

Cute dates, bisexual chaos and game-changing kisses: video games' best queer moments

The Guardian

Life Is Strange, as a series, is really characterised by a patented mix of earnestness and cringe for me – but you can't fault its determination to put queer characters front and centre. It has been variably successful at this – the messy relationship between shy, photography-obsessed Max and chaotic blue-haired Chloe in 2015's original Life Is Strange was left somewhat ambiguous, but Alex Chen in Life Is Strange: True Colors was openly bi and pretty laidback about it. My favourite queer moment from the series, though, came in last year's Double Exposure. Max Caulfield is now a grownup with a photography residency at a small-town college, and has finally figured herself out. But when it comes to Amanda, the exceedingly cool lesbian behind the bar at the local pub?
