To inspire you in 2018, we wanted to share our 2nd Annual Applied AI Digest Review – a recap of all the major AI news and trends of 2017. We are clearly not in a steady-state situation. Is this a bubble or a revolution? The answer surely includes a bit of revolution--the fields of vision and speech recognition have been turned over by great empirical successes created by deep neural architectures and more generally machine learning has found plentiful real-world uses. Artificial intelligence offers limitless potential for the financial industry, but at Fortune's MPW International Summit on Tuesday Mastercard vice chairman Ann Cairns also called attention to some of its existential risks.

During our May Applied AI Insiders Series event, we will explore practical ways AI is being applied to different Human/Computer interfaces, moving us beyond touch and closer to how we interact with other humans – using speech, gestures and even body language. This event is INVITE ONLY. If you did not receive an invitation you can request one below. A long-standing goal of human-computer interaction has been to enable people to have a natural conversation with computers, as they would with each other. In recent years, we have witnessed a revolution in the ability of computers to understand and to generate natural speech, especially with the application of deep neural networks.

Artificial-intelligence programs could develop some much-needed common sense by competing in scavenger hunts inside virtual homes filled with simulated coffee tables, couches, lamps, and other everyday things. Researchers at Facebook and Georgia Tech developed the scavenger-hunt challenge. Can you imagine being able to solve complex problems almost instantaneously? What would normally take months would take minutes. Seemingly impossible questions would become straightforward to answer.

According to a new report by the House of Lords select committee on AI, the UK is already in an exceptionally strong position. "Britain contains leading AI companies, a dynamic academic research culture, a vigorous start-up ecosystem and a constellation of legal, ethical, financial and linguistic strengths located in proximity to each other," the committee concludes. In the heavy industry sector, the cost of unpredicted repairs or machine failures can be very expensive. For example: A cargo train with an engine failure in will incur costs from its own repairs, from the transit required to reach the broken down engine, and with holding up other trains and cargo in the process. In this episode of the O'Reilly Podcast, I talk with Simon Moss, vice president of industry consulting and solutions, Americas, at Teradata.

We're excited to announce that the following speakers will be joining us at the Applied AI Conference 2018, on April 12th in San Francisco: See Full Speaker Line-up here. The conference is limited to 800 attendees and we usually sell out weeks ahead of our event. Backstory: Most algorithms can be trained in only one domain, and can't use what's been learned for one task to perform another, new one. A big hope for AI is to have systems take insights from one setting and apply them elsewhere--what's called transfer learning. In July, China unveiled a plan to become the world leader in artificial intelligence and create an industry worth $150 billion to its economy by 2030.

Artificial Intelligence systems are going to crash some of our cars, and sometimes they're going to recommend longer sentences for black Americans than for whites. We know this because they've already gone wrong in these ways.
