Sen. Booker 'frustrated' by lack of transparency about drones, says it's causing 'misinformation to spread'

FOX News

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., responds to high-ranking officials who have dismissed his previous claim that'reliable' sources said mystery drones flying over New Jersey originated from an Iranian mothership. Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., said he is "frustrated" by the government's lack of transparency surrounding the recent drone sightings in his state and surrounding areas in the mid-Atlantic region. On Capitol Hill on Thursday, the senator said that he has issued a letter asking for more information because Americans should be aware of what is happening in the skies. "I've been a little frustrated," he told reporters. "There hasn't been enough transparency letting people know what's happening. It's allowing a lot of potentially misinformation to spread, or at least fear. We should know what's going on over our skies."

I Launched a Project to Determine the NBA's Hottest Players. This Year, We Lost Our Minds.

Slate

Well, the NBA just rolled out its All-Star weekend all over us, culminating in a splash of hardware for Damian Lillard, a lackluster game I turned off in the third quarter, and a surprise spotlight on Mac McClung, who my friend Jennifer said "looks like his name is Air Bud." I'm from L.A.; I can respect the pageantry. But the weekend obscured what many of us appreciate most about NBA players: Many of them are very hot, and they deserve to be recognized for it. As such, I assembled a select committee to honor the year's biggest smokeshows: the All-Hunk NBA teams. The All-Hunk NBA team is a near-annual honor bestowed on the hunkiest players in the league during the NBA season.

'The State Of Being Lonely': South Korean Horror Writer Shortlisted For Booker

International Business Times

A head pops out of the toilet, a woman gets pregnant from birth control pills -- South Korean Booker Prize nominee Bora Chung's short stories are full of horror, inspired by her own lonely life. An academic specialising in Slavic literature, Chung was considered a "genre writer" and excluded from South Korea's mainstream literary scene. Until recently, she was relatively unknown to local readers. Her stories -- which combine science fiction, horror and fantasy -- are not considered "pure" literature by Seoul's cultural elite. But her life took a dramatic turn when her 2017 collection "Cursed Bunny" caught the eye of translator Anton Hur. Hur's English edition of the book, released by British publisher Honford Star, has been named a finalist for this year's International Booker Prize.

Proposed US AI Bill Costs May Outweigh Benefits

#artificialintelligence

Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), with Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Representative Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y.), introduced in early February the Algorithmic Accountability Act of 2022. This bill aims to bring transparency and oversight of software, algorithms and other automated systems that are used to make automated decisions. "As algorithms and other automated decision systems take on increasingly prominent roles in our lives, we have a responsibility to ensure that they are adequately assessed for biases that may disadvantage minority or marginalized communities," said Sen. Booker. The bill requires companies to conduct impact assessments for bias, effectiveness and other factors, when using automated decision systems to make critical decisions. The bill also gives the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) the authority to require the companies to comply with this bill and to create a public repository of these automated systems.

Artificial Intelligence and the Fair Housing Act: Algorithms Under Attack? JD Supra

The Fair Housing Act ("FHA"), enacted more than fifty years ago, prohibits discriminatory practices in housing. The FHA makes it illegal to "make unavailable or deny . . . In many jurisdictions, it is also illegal to discriminate on the basis of income (e.g. But recent technological advancements have raised new questions about the statute's reach--both in terms of which entities may be liable for violating the FHA and what new technologies may run afoul of the statute's prohibitions. For example, companies that use, facilitate, or support digital advertising need to be particularly cognizant of the FHA's purview.

Senate bill would make tech companies test algorithms for bias

Engadget

It's well established that algorithms can exhibit bias, however inadvertently, and a trio of US politicians believe they can do something about it. Senators Cory Booker, Yvette Clarke and Ron Wyden have introduced an Algorithmic Accountability Act that would require larger companies to test their algorithms and fix anything "inaccurate, unfair, biased or discriminatory." The move would also ask them to study how their systems protect personal data, and would let the FTC create regulations mandating impact studies for "highly sensitive" automated systems. The bill would only apply to companies that either make more than $50 million per year or have data for at least one million people or devices. Small businesses would theoretically be safe.

How Search Algorithms Are Changing the Course of Mathematics - Issue 70: Variables

Nautilus

Mathematicians long wondered whether it's possible to express the number 33 as the sum of three cubes--that is, whether the equation 33 x³ y³ z³ has a solution. They knew that 29 could be written as 3³ 1³ 1³, for instance, whereas 32 is not expressible as the sum of three integers each raised to the third power. But the case of 33 went unsolved for 64 years. Booker found this odd trio of 16-digit integers by devising a new search algorithm to sift them out of quadrillions of possibilities. The algorithm ran on a university supercomputer for three weeks straight.

Florida student pilot charged with attempt to steal plane

FOX News

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A 22-year-old student pilot suspected of boarding a vacant passenger plane at a central Florida airport early Thursday has been charged with criminal attempt to steal an airplane, officials said. The Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating and trying to determine a motive in the case, according to Orlando-Melbourne International Airport spokeswoman Lori Booker. She told news outlets the student pilot, whose name hasn't been released, also faces a visa violation and criminal trespassing charges. Early Thursday, a man drove to the curb outside the airport, left his car running, hopped a fence and boarded an Airbus 321 American Airlines aircraft sitting in a maintenance facility, Booker said. An avionics technician was in the plane's galley when he saw a shadow, Booker said.

Trump Looms Large Over This Year's South by Southwest Gathering

#artificialintelligence

Donald Trump won't be attending this year's South by Southwest conference, which started Friday in Austin, Texas. But the president will be very much in evidence -- if only in spirit -- at the annual gathering of technologists, musicians and wannabe entrepreneurs. After the election, event organizers scrambled to add panels reflecting a new political era many had believed impossible. The technology industry, much of which opposes the administration's stances on immigration and social issues, has been allotted two full days of Trump-related sessions. The vibe of this year's conference is markedly different from 2016.
