NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, has seen good response to its fund raising initiatives in the current academic year, with Rs26.16 crore contributed by alumni currently residing in the US. Sharad Saraf, chairman, Technocraft Group and Sudarshan Saraf, co-chairman of Technocraft Group, have given Rs15 crore to build a'Technocraft Centre for Applied Artificial Intelligence' at IIT Bombay. The donors believe that the future of technology is with the growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and it is necessary to expose students to AI through a dedicated AI Center, according to IIT Bombay. A campaign spearheaded by IIT Bombay Heritage Foundation in the US received good response, the institute said. "This year IIT Bombay alumni in USA have contributed to $3.6 million (Rs26.16 IIT Bombay had initiated annual fund-raising drive, 'Cherish IIT Bombay' for donors all over India and the world. It has been raising funds for various causes for the benefit of its students and faculty. According to IIT Bombay, the campaign that stands out this year is the IT hardware campaign. "As IIT Bombay moved to online classes in response to the pandemic, many of our students couldn't access the online classes as they couldn't afford the investment in IT hardware at their respective homes.

Machine Learning for faster Drug Discovery

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine-learning (ML) approaches are the present-day buzzwords finding applications in a host of domains affecting our lives. These approaches use known datasets to train and build models that can predict, or sometimes, make decisions about a task. In one such case, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), Mumbai, have in a recent study, developed ML approaches using molecular descriptors for certain types of catalysis that could find use in several therapeutic applications. Traditionally, drug discovery and formulation is an elaborate process. Biological molecules have different properties, the knowledge of which are crucial for binding drug molecules that target proteins.

Country needs skilled personnel in AI & data analytics, says minister

#artificialintelligence

AT A time when the country's Information Technology industry is forced to carry out mass layoffs, experts argue that Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science sectors offer a glimmer of hope. While it is feared that IT jobs are being lost to robots, Y S Chowdary, Minister of State for Science & Technology, told The Indian Express that the country lacks skilled personnel in the fields of Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence. "Softwares are evolving and we need new kinds of skills. There is a huge demand-supply gap in data analytics field," said Chowdary. "Majority of government missions is based on historical data. However, today there is data available even from the unorganised population. We need to concentrate on capacity building to analyse this data to better our governance," said Chowdary, who was the chief guest at a Data Science Congress held in the city earlier this month.
