Weekend Picks: 'Cats,' Martha Graham and 'Magic Flute' inspired by video games
The Oscars are over, so your weekend should be wide open to check out the return of "Cats" to L.A., a revival of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie," and two very different takes on two very different Mozart works, courtesy of Los Angeles Opera and Pacific Opera Project. Composer Meredith Monk presents a new vocal work, two L.A. Times Critics' Choice dramas give their final performances, and Los Angeles Ballet, Trinity Irish Dance and Martha Graham Dance Company all perform. If you know those lines, you know "Cats." Based on poems by T.S. Eliot, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony-winning musical is back with new choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler ("Hamilton"). The law of un-Nintendo'd consequences will be in full effect as Pacific Opera Project opens its season with "The Magic Flute."
A deep learning approach to real-time parking occupancy prediction in spatio-termporal networks incorporating multiple spatio-temporal data sources
Yang, Shuguan, Ma, Wei, Pi, Xidong, Qian, Sean
A deep learning model is proposed for predicting block-level parking occupancy in real time. The model leverages Graph-Convolutional Neural Networks (GCNN) to extract the spatial relations of traffic flow in large-scale networks, and utilizes Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN) with Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) to capture the temporal features. In addition, the model is capable of taking multiple heterogeneously structured traffic data sources as input, such as parking meter transactions, traffic speed, and weather conditions. The model performance is evaluated through a case study in Pittsburgh downtown area. The proposed model outperforms other baseline methods including multi-layer LSTM and Lasso with an average testing MAPE of 12.0\% when predicting block-level parking occupancies 30 minutes in advance. The case study also shows that, in generally, the prediction model works better for business areas than for recreational locations. We found that incorporating traffic speed and weather information can significantly improve the prediction performance. Weather data is particularly useful for improving predicting accuracy in recreational areas.

The Moviegoer, Nov. 19-25
Family Flicks The delightful 1995 charmer Babe about a smart but sweetly naive little pig who goes to live on a storybook-like farm (each chapter is introduced with title cards by a trio of singing mice) is still a treat for adults and tots. James Cromwell is excellent as Farmer Hoggett. The meditative drama is as spare in dialogue as it is rich visually. Indeed it is the villainous, lip-reading AI computer, Hal 9000 (voiced by Douglas Rain), who delivers the film's most memorable lines. Thin Man Double Feature Shot over just two weeks on a B-movie budget, The Thin Man (1934) was an immediate hit with both critics and audiences.
