Comcast Acquires Artificial Intelligence Company For Network Security - MITechNews
BluVector has developed an AI/machine learning-enabled cybersecurity detection, visibility, and containment system for network security applications. With the deal, CMCSA is not only acquiring security technology for its internal operations but also intends to support BluVector's continuing business offerings. Arlington, Virginia-based BluVector was founded in 2015 to employ the latest machine learning software techniques to automate and improve security threat detection and containment requirements for enterprises and government organizations. Management is headed by new CEO Eric Malawer, who was previously Comcast's General Manager, Cybersecurity Growth and Innovation. Below is a presentation of BluVector's approach to machine learning for cybersecurity: BluVector's primary offerings include functionalities provided by its machine learning engine: LLR Partners provided private equity funding to the company in 2017.
IBC Banks on AI for Security
The IBC Bank, which is the 79th largest in the United States, focuses on Texas and Oklahoma, and uses BluVector security to find malware and compromised data in emails and other files. Artificial intelligence (AI) is at the core of BluVector. "Bits and pieces of AI lend themselves well to making certain determinations," Senior Vice President and CISO John Byers told IT Business Edge. "As they collect and learn things, it saves you [an employee] and other things. It hasn't reached the point at which it's mature enough to rate replacing several employees. But it does a good job as entry level."
What's Artificial Intelligence? Here's a Solid Definition
Don't trust vendors' marketing materials to help you find a workable, accurate definition. "It's almost criminal, the use of these terms by the vendors today," says Kris Lovejoy, CEO of security firm BluVector. "Pretty much anybody that has analytics embedded in their system is calling it a form of AI. It's confusing the marketplace, and frankly, I think it's incredibly unfair to the consumer." So what exactly is artificial intelligence?
Three Cybersecurity AI Startups Acquired By Tech Giants In 2017
AI is important to the future of cybersecurity, although some experts don't believe the tech will be a silver bullet. Nonetheless, recent acquisitions show the rising significance of this technology in the fight against cyber criminals. This year through 2/28/2017, there have been three acquisitions of cybersecurity startups that offer AI. All three cybersecurity startups featured in this brief offer machine learning technology, a set of algorithms that are used to train machines to learn from data and predict trends and outcomes. AI is an umbrella term that includes companies using machine learning algorithms for natural language processing, predictive analytics, and pattern recognition, among other things.
Enabling security teams to hunt for threats that evade today's defenses. BluVector
Tysons Corner, Va.--February 14, 2017--BluVector, the leader in applying supervised machine learning to detect and respond to advanced security threats at digital speed, announced its expanded operations following the completion from the recent LLR acquisition. BluVector is now positioned for rapid growth powered by new executive hires, new product enhancements and expansion into key verticals such as financial, retail and healthcare. BluVector's supervised machine learning technology allows organizations to monitor high bandwidth, globally dispersed networks for advanced threats that are consistently evading traditional security infrastructures. The technology is based on over a decade of research that inspects millions of packets per second of North-South and East-West traffic to predict, in real-time, if software and application files pose a threat to an enterprise on-premise and in the cloud. Evaluating vast collections of both benign and malicious software and applying machine learning science, BluVector is uncovering the markers and mutations of today's modern threats.
