KubeEdge.AI: AI Platform for Edge Devices
Wang, Sean, Hu, Yuxiao, Wu, Jason
The demand for smartness in embedded systems has been mounting up drastically in the past few years. Embedded system today must address the fundamental challenges introduced by cloud computing and artificial intelligence. KubeEdge [1] is an edge computing framework build on top of Kubernetes [2]. It provides compute resource management, deployment, runtime and operation capabilities on geo-located edge computing resources, from the cloud, which is a natural fit for embedded systems. Here we propose KubeEdge.AI, an edge AI framework on top of KubeEdge. It provides a set of key modules and interfaces: a data handling and processing engine, a concise AI runtime, a decision engine, and a distributed data query interface. KubeEdge.AI will help reduce the burdens for developing specific edge/embedded AI systems and promote edge-cloud coordination and synergy.

Can Data Analytics Make Dangerous Intersections Safer?
Bellevue, Wash., located in the Seattle metro area, is undergoing a citywide review of near-miss incidents involving pedestrians, cyclists and other cars. Using images from its closed circuit video network, as well as high-level analytics and machine learning, the city wants to understand which streets and intersections are the most dangerous, and how they might be made safer. Bellevue is partnering with the group Together for Safer Roads (TSR), which represents a coalition of private-sector companies, including Brisk Synergies, to conduct a comprehensive near-miss study from August to September where roughly half of the city's network of 80 public video cameras will be used to gather some 34,000 hours of footage representing about 21 terabytes of data. The data will be processed by Brisk using artificial intelligence and machine learning to gain insights into "near-miss" incidents. "This is the first network-wide traffic safety monitoring assessment of its kind," said Franz Loewenherz, principal transportation planner for Bellevue.

AI software scans satellite images and predicts how many residents are overweight
Scientists have created an AI that can detect obesity from space. The software scans satellite images and predicts how many residents are overweight based on the availability of parks, fast food stores and other buildings in the area. Researchers used deep learning to scan 150,000 high-resolution satellite images from Google Maps in order to identify patterns. They looked at data in six US cities - Bellevue, Seattle, Tacoma, Los Angeles, Memphis, and San Antonio. The team found that features of the built environment explained 64.8 per cent of the variation in obesity between cities.

Bellevue, Kirkland plan to bring self-driving vanpools to the Eastside – Tech Check News
Steve Marshall is directing the city of Bellevue's efforts to bring a fleet of self-driving vanpools to the region. If it is successful, it could shuttle up to 3,000 commuters along the I-405 corridor from Auburn to Kirkland. Aaron Kunkler/Staff photo As the technology powering self-driving vehicles continues to advance, the cities of Bellevue and Kirkland have a plan to bring a fleet of vans to the Eastside. The CommutePool program was drafted by staff from the two cities, which submitted a grant application to the U.S. Department of Transportation last week asking for $3 million to help fund the $9 million project. Bellevue Transportation Technology Partnership Manager Steve Marshall has been working with large employers in the area to gather support for the electric, self-driving vanpools.

With Stephen Hawking opening an AI lab it's only a matter of time before smart robots take over for humans in the factory, on the battlefield, in the supermarket, and behind the counter. There's an old Chinese saying: "If you want to do anything good, easy and fast, you need connections," said Nancy Yang, a spokesperson for the fourth annual Seattle Biz-Tech Summit meeting today in Bellevue, Wash., outside Seattle. "Here in the U.S., we use email and messaging, but the Chinese way, and really for many Asians, is to meet face to face." Tanvi Lad shook off her first game loss and pulled off a rare victory over Rituparna Das in a three-set match and entered the women's singles final of the Manorama-Indian Open National-ranking badminton tournament here on Saturday. Stephen Hawking, the famous scientist who once said intelligent machines could be mankind's biggest threat, opened an artificial intelligence lab in Britain this week to help develop robot surgeons and Terminator-style military droids.
