Demixing odors - fast inference in olfaction
The olfactory system faces a difficult inference problem: it has to determine what odors are present based on the distributed activation of its receptor neurons. Here we derive neural implementations of two approximate inference algorithms that could be used by the brain. One is a variational algorithm (which builds on the work of Beck.
The beer of the future? MailOnline tastes one of the world's first beers designed by AI
It seems the usefulness of ChatGPT knows no bounds as even brewers are using the tool to make new beer. German brand Beck's is one of a number of companies to have turned to the clever AI chatbot to make a futuristic beverage, called Beck's Autonomous. ChatGPT not only came up with the beer's recipe but also its packaging, name, advertising campaign and even a design for the beer's website. Beck's is the first commercial brewery to work with ChatGPT, although other independent brew houses in North America have already done the same. MailOnline gave Beck's Autonomous a try to see how it compares with the brand's flagship lager.

Unlike mathematical programming and SAT solving, ConstraintProgramming (CP) is based on the idea that both modeling and solving of combinatorial optimization problems can be based on conjunctions of loosely coupled, recurring, combinatorial sub-problems (aka "global constraints"). This rich representational approach means that, for better or for worse, pretty much anything can be expressed as a global constraint. Much of CP's success, however, has come from exploiting only one aspect of the rich constraint definition: global constraint propagation. In this talk, I will investigate how work in CP, SAT, AI planning, and mathematical programming can be understood as more seriously pursuing the implications of a rich constraint definition and how the interplay between local and global information can lead to dynamic problem reformulations and a flexible hybrid solver architecture.

Stream reasoning is the task of continuously deriving conclusions on streaming data. As a research theme, it is targeted by different communities which emphasize different aspects, e.g., throughput vs. expressiveness. This thesis aims to advance the theoretical foundations underlying diverse stream reasoning approaches and to convert obtained insights into a prototypical expressive rule-based reasoning system that is lacking to date.
Security AI is the next big thing
In the world of cybersecurity, speed kills. In less than 20 minutes, a skilled adversary can break into an organization's network and start exfiltrating critical data assets, and as the volume of data modern companies produce increases, it's becoming ever more difficult for human analysts to spot malicious activity until it's too late. This is where cybersecurity AI can come to the rescue. This hostile threat landscape has led organizations such as Microsoft to use AI as part of their internal and external cybersecurity strategy. "We're seeing this incredible increase in the volume of attacks, from human-operated ransomware through all different kinds of zero-day attacks," said Ann Johnson, corporate vice president of security, compliance, and identity at Microsoft.
Artificial Intelligence Could Have Helped Alleviate Suffering From Texas Blackouts
A powerful once-in-a-decade winter storm in February resulted in the near total collapse of Texas' power grid, resulting in residential and commercial areas suffering days-long blackouts, which led to at least 57 deaths and billions of dollars in property damage across the state's 254 counties. In addition, some Texans who did have power are facing overcharges of about $16 billion for electricity consumed during the weeklong crisis, according to a watchdog for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), the quasi-governmental entity that oversees the Lone Star State's power grid. While debates as to the root causes of the grid's failure are likely to go on for months if not years, some energy experts contend that a potential solution exists that could have alleviated some of the worst effects of the power shutdown – the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) into the management of the grid. Artificial Intelligence is loosely defined as the use of computer systems to process large volumes of data in order to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition and decision-making. Although AI technology has been embraced by a number of other economic sectors, such as retail and insurance industries, the operators of the U.S. power grid have been slower to adopt it.

Beck teams up with NASA and AI for 'Hyperspace' visual album experience
Grammy award-winning artist Beck took an ethereal journey to the stars for his 2019 record "Hyperspace." Now, he has taken this cosmic journey a giant leap forward in a collaboration with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and artificial intelligence creatives OSK. The result: A visual album experience titled "Hyperspace: A.I. Exploration." The new visual album, unveiled today (Aug. To launch "Hyperspace: A.I. Explorations," Beck premiered a bonus track from "Hyperspace" titled "I Am The Cosmos (42420)," on Aug. 12 on Youtube along with videos for the rest of the songs.

Mimicking a Cybersecurity Analyst's Intuition with AI
With years of cybersecurity experience under his belt, security expert Mike Beck investigated whether he could teach AI to think like a cybersecurity analyst--and helped to transform the fight for online security in the process. Few people know what it's like to battle cyberattacks in a high-stakes environment better than Mike Beck. Without his expertise, London's biggest event in 2012 could have gone dark. Beck, a cybersecurity expert with a background in UK intelligence, joined the UK's MI5 domestic security service shortly before the 2012 Summer Games opened. When the UK government learned of a serious threat to the electricity infrastructure supporting the Games, they looked to one of their newest hires.
