Kyiv hit by barrage of drone strikes as Putin spurns Trump's truce bid

BBC News

Friday's attacks were the latest in a string of major Russian air strikes on Ukraine that have intensified in recent weeks as ceasefire talks have largely stalled. War in Ukraine has been raging for more than three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Following his conversation with Putin on Thursday, Trump said that "no progress" to end the fighting had been made. "I'm very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don't think he's there, and I'm very disappointed," Trump said. "I'm just saying I don't think he's looking to stop, and that's too bad."

The Senate Just Put Clean Energy for AI in the Crosshairs

WIRED

After more than a day of continuous debate, the US Senate passed its version of the budget megabill Tuesday afternoon--with potentially disastrous implications for the future of renewable energy in the country. The bill ends credits for projects placed in service--a term meaning, essentially, that a project is ready to provide power to the grid--after 2027, putting hundreds of planned projects around the country in jeopardy. "This is a bill to punish renewables," says Costa Samaras, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. "There is a real need to add clean energy supply to the grid--electrifying our cars, electrifying our homes, electrifying our buildings, electrifying our factories, and the demands from AI are all going to require new clean energy. What this bill does is make it harder and more expensive."

Russia resumes strikes on Ukraine as Easter ceasefire ends

Al Jazeera

Russia unleashed a barrage of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine as a short-lived Easter ceasefire expired. Russian forces launched 96 drones and three missiles on eastern and southern Ukraine overnight, Ukraine's Air Force reported on Monday. The swift return to major hostilities following a pause declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin comes as the United States struggles to persuade Moscow to agree on a longer-term ceasefire. The overnight assault targeted Ukraine's Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Cherkasy regions, the Air Force wrote on Telegram. Air defence units intercepted 42 drones and redirected another 47.

One killed, four injured as barrage of Russian drones hits Ukraine's Kyiv

Al Jazeera

One person has been killed and four others were injured when Russian drones targeted the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv, military and civilian officials said, as Russia launched barrages across the country. The Ukrainian Air Force said its air defences shot down 60 out of 93 Russian drones launched at Ukraine since the early hours of Friday. Moscow's forces have escalated aerial attacks across Ukraine in recent days, including a New Year's Day drone attack targeting central Kyiv that killed two people. In the latest barrage, a truck driver was killed by drone debris, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, acting governor for the Kyiv region. He said the debris also damaged several houses, injuring four people, including a 16-year-old boy.

Russia says it intercepted more than 150 Ukrainian drones in 'massive' raid

Al Jazeera

Russia says it has stopped a "massive" Ukrainian air attack by downing at least 158 drones in 15 regions, including two over Russia's capital Moscow. The Russian defence ministry on Sunday said 46 of the drones were shot over the Kursk region, where Ukraine has sent its forces in recent weeks in the largest incursion on Russian soil since World War II. A further 34 drones were shot down over the Bryansk region, 28 over the Voronezh region, and 14 over the Belgorod region โ€“ all of which border Ukraine, the ministry said, adding that a total of 15 Russian regions were hit. Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Sunday said falling debris from one of the two drones shot down over the city caused a fire at an oil refinery. Also in Russia, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said nine people were wounded in Ukrainian aerial missile attacks in the Russian border region.

Hezbollah fires 200 rockets and drones into Israel

BBC News

The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has launched more than 200 rockets and attack drones into northern Israel, in response to the killing of one of its senior commanders. Israel's military said one of its officers was killed in the barrage, which started a number of fires. The military also said it had targeted Hezbollah "military structures" and other targets in southern Lebanon in response. Lebanese media reported that one person was killed in an Israeli drone strike in the town of Houla. The latest barrage, which followed one comprising 100 rockets on Wednesday afternoon, was one of the biggest so far in the nine months of cross-border violence which have raised fears of an all-out war.

Iran-Israel Shadow War Timeline: A History of Recent Hostilities

NYT > Middle East

For decades, Israel and Iran have fought a shadow war across the Middle East, trading attacks by land, sea, air and in cyberspace. A recent round of strikes -- mainly an aerial barrage by Iran against Israel last weekend -- has brought the conflict more clearly into the open and raised fears of a broader war. A retaliatory Israeli strike on an Iranian air base on Friday, however, appeared limited in scope, and analysts said it suggested an effort to pull back from the dangerous cycle and potentially move the war back into the shadows. August 2019: An Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian-trained militants in Syria, a drone set off a blast near a Hezbollah office in Lebanon and an airstrike in Qaim, Iraq, killed a commander of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia. Israel accused Iran at the time of trying to establish an overland arms-supply line through Iraq and northern Syria to Lebanon, and analysts said the strikes were aimed at stopping Iran and signaling to its proxies that Israel would not tolerate a fleet of smart missiles on its borders. January 2020: Israel greeted with satisfaction the assassination of Maj.

Russia silent on Tehran arms claim as Ukraine downs Iran-built drone

Al Jazeera

Russia has declined to comment on US claims that Iran could supply it with ballistic missiles. Ukraine said it shot down a "rare" Iran-built drone amid a barrage of attacks overnight. The Ukrainian Air Force said on Wednesday that it had downed more than a dozen attack drones and a cruise missile. The overnight assault followed a report by authorities in the southern region of Odesa that a rare Iranian-designed attack and reconnaissance drone had been destroyed. The air force said the overnight barrage was launched from southeast Russia and that a combination of air defence units in several central regions had "destroyed all 14 enemy Shahed-131/136 drones".

The Morning After: Previewing macOS Ventura

Engadget

Apple is trying to reshape the way people work on Macs. Stage Manager in macOS Ventura might seem like a quick visual way to swap between your recently used applications, but according to Devindra Hardawar, who's been testing the first Ventura public beta over the past week, Apple may have solved the window management issues that have plagued Macs since OS X. I'm particularly intrigued by Stage Manager's ability to group apps together and, crucially, remember exactly where you position your windows. I'm sure Windows users are rolling their eyes as they read this. And if you're intrigued, Apple's iOS 16, macOS Ventura and watchOS 9 public betas are ready to download.

One Piece: 10 Best Finishing Moves, Ranked

#artificialintelligence

As a good battle shonen should, One Piece has a variety of iconic fights that are complemented by some flashy and exciting finishing moves. A staple of any anime fight, the idea of the finishing move fuses both brutal power and explicit branding to create some of the most exciting and recognizable attacks ever seen in fiction. In One Piece's world, Devil Fruits, Haki, martial arts, robotic enhancements, and some very loose interpretations of physics all contribute to One Piece's own, colorful gallery of finishing moves. And while rating each one's power and effectiveness is a large discussion within its own right, it's also really fun just looking at which finishing moves are just the coolest and most memorable. Monkey D. Luffy's Gum-Gum Gatling doesn't have the awe-inspiring, simplistic appeal of a one-hit attack; but what it lacks in brevity, it more than makes up for with raw, visceral spectacle.
