Gaurav Banga's Balbix Is Using AI to Automate Cybersecurity for the World's Leading Companies

Gaurav Banga is at the helm of his own company for the third time with cybersecurity specialist Balbix, having previously founded endpoint security software maker Bromium and mobile instant messaging app PDAapps. Gaurav Banga never intended to start a series of cutting-edge high-tech companies. His latest is Balbix, based in San Jose, California, one of the world's most advanced cybersecurity platforms. "I'm an accidental entrepreneur," he told Startup Savant. "While I was earning my Ph.D. in computer science at Rice University, I had intended to be an academic. But when I started applying for faculty positions, I realized I would be teaching undergraduates without knowing much about their future industry careers. So, I took a sabbatical for a year to work in industry, and I had so much fun, I never went back."


MLB teams could use cameras to detect fans who don't wear masks

Baseball's COVID-19-shortened season hasn't gone too well because of multiple outbreaks that have raised calls to shut the season down. However, the league appears to be making plans not only to continue, but possibly have fans in stadiums during the pandemic. According to a Bloomberg report (via Gizmodo), the league has been investigating the use of cameras that could scan fans and spot individuals who are either not wearing masks or are using them improperly. A number of MLB teams have been in contact with a startup called Airspace systems, inquiring about AI software that could detect maskless fans. So far, Airspace has focused on detecting drones near airports and stadiums, but apparently its tech could be repurposed for face mask recognition.

The company designed a drone of its own, jam-packed with sensors and machine intelligence, to autonomously intercept threatening drones at high speeds and carry them away from large crowds. If you think this sounds difficult, you would be right. The company employs myriad technologies for its unmanned flying dogfighters that include computer vision, physics and some pretty serious engineering grit. To not only detect enemy drones, but predict where they will be in the future, CTO Guy Bar-Nahum, and a team of machine learning and computer vision experts, devised a creative method of training their machine learning frameworks using simulated test-flights.
