Estimating the Influence of Sequentially Correlated Literary Properties in Textual Classification: A Data-Centric Hypothesis-Testing Approach

Stylometry aims to distinguish authors by analyzing literary traits assumed to reflect semi-conscious choices distinct from elements like genre or theme. However, these components often overlap, complicating text classification based solely on feature distributions. While some literary properties, such as thematic content, are likely to manifest as correlations between adjacent text units, others, like authorial style, may be independent thereof. We introduce a hypothesis-testing approach to evaluate the influence of sequentially correlated literary properties on text classification, aiming to determine when these correlations drive classification. Using a multivariate binary distribution, our method models sequential correlations between text units as a stochastic process, assessing the likelihood of clustering across varying adjacency scales. This enables us to examine whether classification is dominated by sequentially correlated properties or remains independent. In experiments on a diverse English prose corpus, our analysis integrates traditional and neural embeddings within supervised and unsupervised frameworks. Results demonstrate that our approach effectively identifies when textual classification is not primarily influenced by sequentially correlated literary properties, particularly in cases where texts differ in authorial style or genre rather than by a single author within a similar genre.
The Ballad of the Bots: Sonification Using Cognitive Metaphor to Support Immersed Teleoperation of Robot Teams

As an embodied and spatial medium, virtual reality is proving an attractive proposition for robot teleoperation in hazardous environments. This paper examines a nuclear decommissioning scenario in which a simulated team of semi-autonomous robots are used to characterise a chamber within a virtual nuclear facility. This study examines the potential utility and impact of sonification as a means of communicating salient operator data in such an environment. However, the question of what sound should be used and how it can be applied in different applications is far from resolved. This paper explores and compares two sonification design approaches. The first is inspired by the theory of cognitive metaphor to create sonifications that align with socially acquired contextual and ecological understanding of the application domain. The second adopts a computationalist approach using auditory mappings that are commonplace in the literature. The results suggest that the computationalist approach outperforms the cognitive metaphor approach in terms of predictability and mental workload. However, qualitative data analysis demonstrates that the cognitive metaphor approach resulted in sounds that were more intuitive, and were better implemented for spatialisation of data sources and data legibility when there was more than one sound source.

Segmentation and Nodal Points in Narrative: Study of Multiple Variations of a Ballad
The Lady Maisry ballads afford us a framework within which to segment a storyline into its major components. Segments and as a consequence nodal points are discussed for nine different variants of the Lady Maisry story of a (young) woman being burnt to death by her family, on account of her becoming pregnant by a foreign personage. We motivate the importance of nodal points in textual and literary analysis. We show too how the openings of the nine variants can be analyzed comparatively, and also the conclusions of the ballads.
