Big Tech whistleblower's parents sue, sounding alarm over son's unexpected death

The parents of a young California tech whistleblower whose 2024 death was ruled a suicide are now suing the City and County of San Francisco, alleging they violated public records laws by refusing to fulfill their requests for information about their son's death. Suchir Balaji, 26, was an employee at OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, at the time of his Nov. 26, 2024, death. A San Francisco County medical examiner concluded the next day he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his apartment. "In the two-plus months since their son's passing, Petitioners and their counsel have been stymied at every turn as they have sought more information about the cause of and circumstances surrounding Suchir's tragic death. This petition, they hope, is the beginning of the end of that obstruction," the lawsuit states.

OpenAI whistleblower's mother wants suicide death investigation reopened
If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Balaji's death on November 26 was ruled a suicide, and Fox News Digital previously reported that the San Francisco Police Department found no evidence of foul play. But the 26-year-old's mother is urging police to reopen their investigation, saying it "doesn't look like a normal situation." Bereaved mother Poornima Ramarao told Business Insider that a private autopsy commissioned by Balaji's family and completed in early December produced concerning results. Now, they are working with an attorney to urge the department to conduct a "proper investigation."

OpenAI whistleblower who died was being considered as witness against company
Balaji worked at OpenAI for nearly four years before quitting in August. He had been well-regarded by colleagues at the San Francisco company, where a co-founder this week called him one of OpenAI's strongest contributors who was essential to developing some of its products. "We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news and our hearts go out to Suchir's loved ones during this difficult time," said a statement from OpenAI. Balaji was found dead in his San Francisco apartment on 26 November in what police said "appeared to be a suicide. No evidence of foul play was found during the initial investigation."

OpenAI whistleblower found dead in San Francisco apartment
OpenAI says its models are "trained on publicly available data". Mr Balaji left the company in August, telling the New York Times he had since been working on personal projects. He grew up in Cupertino, California, before going to study computer science at the University of California, Berkeley. A spokesperson for OpenAI said in a statement cited by CNBC News that it was "devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today and our hearts go out to Suchir's loved ones during this difficult time". US and Canadian news publishers, including the New York Times, and a group of best-selling writers, including John Grisham, have filed lawsuits claiming the company was illegally using news articles to train its software.

This robot drills your brain
A drill-wielding robot that bores into your skull for a quick spot of impromptu brain surgery sounds like a scene from a future sci-fi dystopia, in which AI treats Earth's surviving humans like lab rats. In fact, it's a new research project from the good folks at the University of Utah, who have developed a computer-driven automated drill for cranial surgery. That means safely cutting an opening -- called a bone flap -- in the skull so that the brain can be accessed underneath. While it would take an experienced surgeon 2 hours to carry out this task using hand-drilling, the University of Utah's robot is able to achieve the same thing in just 2.5 minutes. That's 50x faster than was previously possible -- which for some reason makes us all kinds of nervous!
