The Huge Problem Waymo Didn't See Coming
A blackout in San Francisco revealed a new way for robotaxis to go wrong. Waymo's self-driving robotaxis can successfully nail a tricky left turn, weave through lanes to drop you off at the airport, and safely pass a U-Haul that's idling in the middle of the street. But during a blackout, they apparently turn into four-wheel bricks. On Saturday, when a major power outage in San Francisco knocked out traffic signals, many Waymo vehicles didn't pull over to the side of the road or seek out a parking space. Nor did they treat intersections as four-way stops, as a human would have. Instead, they just sat there with their hazard lights on, like a student driver freezing up before their big parallel-parking test.

Teens are now using AI chatbots to create and spread nude images of classmates, alarming education experts
A troubling trend has emerged in schools across the United States, with young students falling victim to the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered "nudify" apps that have the power to create fake pornography of classmates. "Nudify" is an umbrella term referring to a plethora of widely available apps and websites that allow users to alter photos of full-dressed individuals and virtually undress them. Some apps can create nude images with just a headshot of the victim. Don Austin, the superintendent of the Palo Alto Unified School District, told Fox News Digital that this type of online harassment can be more relentless compared to traditional in-person bullying. "It used to be that a bully had to come over and push you. Palo Alto is not a community where people are going to come push anybody into a locker. But it's not immune from online bullying," Austin said.

Pentagon goes on AI hiring spree to bring machine learning capabilities to the battlefield
'The Five' discuss how AI generated images are getting harder to distinguish from reality and how the Dalai Lama asked a young boy to suck his tongue. The Pentagon is hiring data scientists, technologists and engineers as part of its effort to incorporate artificial intelligence into the machinery used to wage war. The Defense Department has posted several AI jobs on USAjobs.gov over the last few weeks, including many with salaries well into six figures. One of the higher paying jobs advertised in the last few weeks is for a senior technologist for "cognitive and decision science" at the U.S. Navy's Point Loma Complex in San Diego. That job starts at $170,000 and could pay as much as $212,000 year for someone who can help insert "cutting-edge technology" into Navy weaponry and equipment.

This AI-Designed Enzyme Can Devour Plastic Trash In Hours: Video
Scientists have developed a new enzyme variant that can completely break down waste plastic in under 24 hours, raising hopes that biological processes could provide a route to addressing perhaps part of the world's mounting plastic crisis. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin announced Thursday that they had used artificial intelligence to successfully engineer a type of enzyme, called a hydrolase, that can break down PET plastic into its component molecules. These materials can then be reformed into new products. "The possibilities are endless across industries to leverage this leading-edge recycling process," said Hal Alper, one of the lead researchers and a professor in the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering at UT Austin. "Beyond the obvious waste management industry, this also provides corporations from every sector the opportunity to take a lead in recycling their products. Through these more sustainable enzyme approaches, we can begin to envision a true circular plastics economy."

As Argo AI shuts down, will its driverless technology leave Austin's streets?
Argo AI, a technology company that has been testing its driverless car platoform in Austin, is shutting down. The Pittsburgh-based company has been operating in Central Texas since 2019 in partnership with Ford Motor Company. Ford has been deploying prototypes in Austin to establish the city as a proving ground for autonomous vehicle technology. "In coordination with our shareholders, the decision has been made that Argo AI will not continue on its mission as a company. Many of the employees will receive an opportunity to continue work on automated driving technology with either Ford or Volkswagen, while employment for others will unfortunately come to an end," Argo AI said in a written statement.
