Trump's week in Asia: BBC correspondents on the wins and potential losses

BBC News

US President Donald Trump is arriving in Asia for a whirlwind week of diplomacy, which includes a much-anticipated meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping. Top of the agenda between the two will be trade - an area where tensions between the world's two biggest economies have once again been ramping up. Trump lands in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, as a summit for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or Asean, begins on Sunday. He will then visit Japan and finally South Korea, where the White House says he will meet Xi. So what are the wins Trump and other leaders are hoping for, and what are the pitfalls?

Towards Adaptive AI Governance: Comparative Insights from the U.S., EU, and Asia

Kulothungan, Vikram, Gupta, Deepti

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

--Artificial intelligence (AI) trends vary significantly across global regions, shaping the trajectory of innovation, regulation, and societal impact. This variation influences how dif - ferent regions approach AI development, balancing technological progress with ethical and regulatory considerations. This study conducts a comparative analysis of AI trends in the United States (US), the European Union (EU), and Asia, focusing on three key dimensions: generative AI, ethical oversight, and industrial applications. The US prioritizes market -driven innovation with minimal regulatory constraints, the EU enforces a precautionary risk -based framework emphasizing ethical safeguards, and Asia employs state -guided AI strategies that balance rapid deployment with regulatory oversight. Although these approaches reflect different economic models and policy priorities, their divergence poses challenges to international collaboration, regulatory harmonization, and the development of global AI standards. To address these challenges, this paper synthesizes regional strengths to propose an adaptive AI governance framework that integrates risk -tiered oversight, innovation accelerators, and strategic alignment mechanisms. By bridging governance gaps, this study offers actionable insights for fostering responsible AI development while ensuring a balance between technological progress, ethical imperatives, and regulatory coherence. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in the 21st century, reshaping industries, governance structures, and societal interactions at an unprecedented pace. From generative AI creating human - like text and images to autonomous systems revolutionizing healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, AI's influence is profound and far - reaching.

Assessing and Predicting Air Pollution in Asia: A Regional and Temporal Study (2018-2023)

Rahman, Anika, Khatun, Mst. Taskia

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This study analyzes and predicts air pollution in Asia, focusing on PM 2.5 levels from 2018 to 2023 across five regions: Central, East, South, Southeast, and West Asia. South Asia emerged as the most polluted region, with Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan consistently having the highest PM 2.5 levels and death rates, especially in Nepal, Pakistan, and India. East Asia showed the lowest pollution levels. K-means clustering categorized countries into high, moderate, and low pollution groups. The ARIMA model effectively predicted 2023 PM 2.5 levels (MAE: 3.99, MSE: 33.80, RMSE: 5.81, R: 0.86). The findings emphasize the need for targeted interventions to address severe pollution and health risks in South Asia.

The clever tech powering a wave of pig-butchering scams

FOX News

Fox News' Danamarie McNicholl reports alongside the Secret Service as they detect and prevent the use of credit card skimmers, traced to a crime ring led in Eastern Europe. Pig-butchering scams are getting more sophisticated -- and more costly -- by the day. One report found criminals have swindled an estimated 75 billion from victims. And just recently, a criminal organization in Asia was taken down, adding another 46 million to that tally. I've talked to lots of pig-butchering victims.

Live AI deepfake video makes 'pig butchering' scams more convincing

PCWorld

"Pig butchering" is an unsavory term for a very specific kind of phishing attack, wherein the scammer targets a wealthy individual with the lure of romance and then takes them for all they're worth. It's hardly a new idea -- they used to call this kind of thing "fleecing" -- but new software tools are making it a lot easier and more effective. A ring of scammers in Hong Kong managed to use live "deepfake" video to steal millions from their victims. Police in Hong Kong arrested 27 people who operated out of an office and conspired to rip off wealthy people by pretending to be attractive romance prospects and getting them to invest big bucks in phony cryptocurrency schemes. The methodology is familiar: Set yourself up as an attractive stranger with an alluring profile photo, slowly build up a rapport with the victim through text messages, and casually hint at the prospect of vast profits with a new crypto platform.

Robots are stepping into one of Asia's dirtiest farm jobs

The Japan Times

A drone buzzes between trees on a humid Malaysian morning, monitoring the oil palm fruits as they ripen. Self-driving trucks rumble over the vast plantation's uneven ground, laying fertilizer and picking up the densely packed harvested bunches. These are just some of the robots the Southeast Asian nation's top palm growers hope will take over the sector's most difficult and dirty jobs, plugging chronic worker shortages that have disrupted supplies of the world's most-consumed edible oil. With global stockpiles set for the first back-to-back decline in more than 40 years, Malaysia has every reason to push for automation to boost production. Increased awareness of the industry's problematic reliance on migrant workers -- clouded by restrictions and labor abuses -- has also encouraged companies to find alternative solutions, said Mohamad Helmy Othman Basha, group managing director of SD Guthrie, a government-linked company previously known as Sime Darby Plantation.
