Published Sept. 18, 2024 Updated Sept. 19, 2024 10:46 AM PT Mayor Karen Bass said she would conduct a nationwide search for the next chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, but in the end it seems she found three finalists close to home. Deputy Chief Emada Tingirides and Robert "Bobby" Arcos, a former LAPD assistant chief who works in the L.A. County district attorney's office, were seen arriving at Getty House, the mayor's residence, for their candidate interviews over the span of a few hours Tuesday. The third candidate is said to be former Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell, who also served in the LAPD, leaving as first assistant chief.

A Survey of Artificial Intelligence Research at the IIIA
Mantaras, Ramon Lopez de (Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC))
It was founded in 1991 and, since 1994, has been located on the campus of the Autonomous University of Barcelona. IIIA grew out of an AI research group at the Center for Advanced Studies in Blanes (Spain) that started AI research in 1985. On average IIIA has had about 50 members per year during the last 12 years with a peak of almost 80 members in 2012. In total around 200 different people, including visiting researchers as well as master's and Ph.D. students, have been members of IIIA over the past 20 years. Seventy-seven students have completed their Ph.D. work at our Institute, 48 of them during the last 12 years.

Playing with Cases: Rendering Expressive Music with Case-Based Reasoning
Mántaras, Ramon López de (Spanish National Research Council (CSIC))
This paper surveys significant research on the problem of rendering expressive music by means of AI techniques with an emphasis on Case-Based Reasoning. Following a brief overview discussing why we prefer listening to expressive music instead of lifeless synthesized music, we examine a representative selection of well-known approaches to expressive computer music performance with an emphasis on AI-related approaches. In the main part of the paper we focus on the existing CBR approaches to the problem of synthesizing expressive music, and particularly on TempoExpress, a case-based reasoning system developed at our Institute, for applying musically acceptable tempo transformations to monophonic audio recordings of musical performances. Finally we briefly describe an ongoing extension of our previous work consisting on complementing audio information with information of the gestures of the musician. Music is played through our bodies, therefore capturing the gesture of the performer is a fundamental aspect that has to be taken into account in future expressive music renderings. This paper is based on the “2011 Robert S. Engelmore Memorial Lecture” given by the first author at AAAI/IAAI 2011.
