Eyes in the tech world have turned toward Mountain View, California this week. The San Francisco Bay Area city is where Google's headquarters is located, making it a logical place to hold the company's annual developer conference. That's right, gang, Google I/O 2026 kicked off on Tuesday with the usual opening keynote, which is where the company reveals what's arguably the event's most relevant info for consumers. Google made a ton of Android announcements last week, so its mobile ecosystem wasn't really on the agenda. But what else could the onus possibly have been on if not AI? We heard the word Gemini more times than I could possibly care to count, and the company had many updates to share on that front. Search, Google's longtime bread and butter, was a big focus of the event. The company talked up a new Ask YouTube feature as well as changes to AI subscription pricing and Workspace features like Docs and Gmail.

Google Search is becoming even more of a showpiece for its AI ambitions. Today at Google I/O 2026, the company announced that Search has been upgraded to the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, which it says offers faster inferencing, smarter results and the ability to process different types of media. As a result, Google is also launching a new Intelligent Search Box that can dynamically get larger to fit complex queries, as well as use videos, images, files and even Chrome tabs as inputs. None of this is a surprise, though. Over the past year, we've seen Google slowly upgrade the AI mode in Search -- now, the company is just making an AI a more essential part of searching the web. That's good news for users who like the more conversational capabilities of Google's AI, but it's even worse news for the people who are trying to maintain the simple purity of Google's original search engine.


Google Search Goes Agentic--and Doesn't Need You Anymore

Instead of clicking on a bunch of random website links, I was reading an AI summary positioned at the top of my search results and sometimes clicking through to double-check the accuracy of the output. The next evolution of Search that Google is building asks for even less active participation from users. You're really the most involved at the start of the journey, and that's it. You tell the agents what you want to know, and they do the clicking and even calling on your behalf. Rather than you going off on some online adventure, it's the agent that's hoovering up anything it can find and bouncing between different sites.


Vibe coding apps taught me how hard real coding is

PCWorld explores the reality of "vibe coding" with AI tools, where the author attempted to build four apps using Claude Code and Google's Antigravity. Only one Docker Swarm dashboard succeeded after a week of effort, while three OpenClaw replications failed due to vague prompts and poor planning. The experience reveals that AI-assisted development still requires significant human creativity, detailed blueprints, and specific instructions to avoid "garbage in, garbage out" results. Like so many others, I jumped onto the vibe coding bandwagon, entranced by the idea of building my own incredibly useful apps with nothing but an AI prompt. Over the course of about six weeks, I did manage to build my own apps-four of them, to be precise.



Antigravity A1 drone review: FPV flying unlike anything else

Unfortunately, there are some usability bumps. The Antigravity A1 is what happens when Insta360's 360-degree cameras are given wings and flying feels like a video game. Spinning out as its own brand, Antigravity's debut drone is a big swing: a three-piece set with a drone that captures 8K 360-degree video, FPV goggles and a motion controller. Challenging the dominance of DJI's (many!) consumer drones is a big ask. Antigravity's approach is to play to its strengths in 360-degree video and smartphone-first editing.

The world's first 360-degree drone is fun all around, if you don't mind the steep price or wearing goggles to control it. As someone who has been reviewing camera drones for over a decade, it's rare for me to encounter one that feels genuinely new. While DJI's continual stream of steadily improving, ever-reliable drones almost always impresses, what Antigravity has done with its first-ever product, the A1, essentially invents an entirely novel subcategory: the 360 drone. Using the same shoot-first, frame-later technology as the Insta360 X5 (Antigravity is technically a distinct company from Insta360, but the brands have close ties), the A1 has twin cameras to capture everything around it, allowing the user to reframe the footage later using mobile or desktop apps. Each of the cameras uses a 1/1.28-inch sensor and an ultrawide lens to capture a hemispherical view.


Gear News of the Week: Insta360 Debuts a Drone Company, and DJI Surprises With an 8K 360 Camera

The 360 camera company Insta360 has entered the drone market with a spin-off brand called Antigravity. This new company hasn't released a drone yet, but it's coming soon and will likely have a slightly different take from current market leaders like DJI. Antigravity's drone is expected to feature 360 cameras with 8K resolution. It will also fall under the 250-gram weight limit, meaning it won't require a license. The 360-degree camera makes sense from the company that makes our favorite 360 camera, though the usefulness of shooting straight up into the drone is questionable.
