PKK claims attack on Turkish defence company near Ankara that killed five
The outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has claimed responsibility for an attack on a Turkish state-run defence company near the capital, Ankara, that killed five people and wounded 22. The "act of sacrifice" in Ankara "was carried out by a team of the immortals battalion" of the PKK, the group said on the Telegram messaging app on Friday. Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAS) was attacked on Wednesday with fighters setting off explosives and opening fire using automatic rifles at the campus of the company that designs and manufactures civilian and military aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other defence industry and space systems. On Friday, Turkey's Ministry of National Defence said it carried out air strikes for the second night in a row in northern Iraq, hitting 34 PKK targets in Hakurk, Gara, Qandil and Sinjar, destroying shelters, warehouses and other facilities. The overnight strikes followed a security meeting that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan chaired with key ministers and chiefs of the armed forces and intelligence agency in Istanbul. The Turkish government said earlier it had proof that the PKK, listed as a terror group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union, was behind the attack.

Turkey hits US-allied Kurds in Syria, Iraq following terrorist attack on defense group
NATO member Turkey on Thursday carried out a second day of aerial attacks on what it said are Kurdish militant positions in Iraq and Syria, following a terrorist attack on a state-run defense agency this week in which five people were killed. Turkey's National Intelligence Organization reportedly targeted numerous "strategic locations" allegedly used by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) – which was deemed a terrorist organization in the U.S. in 1997 – as well as targets used by Syrian Kurdish militia affiliated with the militant group. Armed drones were used to hit military, intelligence, energy and infrastructure facilities and ammunition depots, The Associated Press reported. Smoke rises as emergency rescue teams and police officers attend outside Turkish Aerospace Industries Inc. on the outskirts of Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2024. However, according to General Commander Mazloum Abdi of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who is Kurdish, the Turkish attacks have been "indiscriminate" and have targeted civilian areas and health centers.

Turkish attacks kills 7 PKK members in Iraq as delegation visits KRG
Turkish drone attacks in northern Iraq have killed seven members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), authorities said, as the country's foreign minister met the president and prime minister of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). "A Turkish army drone struck a PKK vehicle, killing an official and two fighters", the KRG's counterterrorism services said on Thursday. The attack took place in Sidakan district, north of the regional capital Erbil. Later, the counter-terrorism services said that another drone strike in Sidakan had killed four PKK members, including two medical personnel. The PKK has fought a rebellion against Turkey since 1984, and has bases inside KRG territory.

Deepfakes, porn tapes, bots: How AI has shaped a vital NATO ally's presidential election
Sen. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska told Fox News Digital he's concerned about China's use of Artificial Intelligence after a report claimed pro-Chinese groups were spreading CCP propaganda using AI-generated news anchors. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main political opponent accused Russia of using deepfakes and other artificial intelligence (AI)-generated material to meddle in the country's upcoming presidential election. "The Russians have a vested interest in backing an Erdogan presidency to ensure that he basically stays in power, mainly because the Russians benefit [from] driving a wedge between Turkey and NATO, and they've been very successful about that in the last decade or so," Sinan Ciddi, non-resident senior fellow on Turkey at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital. "So, in the last several days, weeks, it has been credibly reported by Turkish sources that Russian bot accounts, Twitter accounts, all sorts of disinformation campaigns have started pressing the thumb down on backing the Erdogan presidency, and that comes as no surprise." The election, scheduled for May 14 alongside parliamentary elections, has proven difficult for Erdogan as his election rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu maintains a slight lead in opinion polls.

What do we know about Ukraine's use of Turkish Bayraktar drones?
During Russia's war on Ukraine, video footage has circulated on the internet showing the Turkish combat drone Bayraktar TB2 successfully striking the Russian army. But as so often during heightened conflicts, it is hard to distinguish between factual events and misinformation – some videos of the drone attacks have already been exposed as the latter. Given the chaotic events on the ground, it is almost impossible to assess how often and how successfully Ukraine has utilised its Turkish drones so far, Mauro Gilli, senior researcher in military technology and international security at ETH Zurich, told Al Jazeera. "There have been some video footages allegedly showing the employment of the TB2. Of course, information at this point is fragmented, and it needs to be taken with caution. "We do know that Ukraine bought some TB2 over the past years and that Turkey and Ukraine signed an agreement for the production within Ukrainian borders of the TB2 – but, as far as I know, production had not started yet.

Iraq fumes against Turkey over deadly drone attack
Iraq cancelled a ministerial visit and summoned Turkey's ambassador on Wednesday as it blamed Ankara for a drone attack that killed two high-ranking Iraqi military officers. Iraqi officials called the attack a "blatant Turkish drone attack" in the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq, where Turkey's military has for weeks raided positions of fighters it considers "terrorists". Two border guard battalion commanders and the driver of their vehicle were killed on Tuesday, the army said in a statement, marking the first Iraqi troop deaths since Turkey launched the cross-border operation in mid-June against Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) rebels. Iraq's foreign ministry - which already summoned the Turkish envoy twice over the military action on its soil - said the ambassador would this time be given "a letter of protest with strong words" rejecting the offensive. The ministry also confirmed the Turkish defence minister would no longer be welcomed for a planned visit on Thursday.

Iraq army says Turkish drone killed two high-ranking commanders
The Iraqi army says two senior security officials have been killed in a "blatant Turkish drone attack" in the country's north, where Ankara has for weeks been raiding positions of fighters it considers "terrorists". The drone targeted a vehicle belonging to the Iraqi border guards in the Bradost area, north of Erbil, the military said in a statement on Tuesday. The strike caused the deaths of the two border guard battalion commanders and the vehicle's driver. There was no immediate statement by Turkey. The deaths announced by the military marked the first time members of the regular Iraqi forces have been killed since Turkey launched a cross-border ground and air operation in mid-June against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the mountainous terrain of northern Iraq.

Turkey deploys surveillance drone to northern Cyprus amid gas drilling dispute
ANKARA – Turkey has dispatched a surveillance and reconnaissance drone to the breakaway north of ethnically divided island nation of Cyprus amid tensions over offshore oil and gas exploration, Turkey's state-run media said Monday. The Anadolu news agency said the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone took off from an airbase in Dalaman, Turkey, and touched down Monday at the airport in Gecitkala -- known as Lefkoniko in Greek, on Cyprus. Kudret Ozersay, foreign minister of the self-declared Turkish Cypriot state, told reporters Sunday that the Turkish deployment would be limited to unarmed drones as there was "no need" for armed ones. Earlier, Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Ersin Tatar said there was an "urgent need" to address the security concerns of Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots in the eastern Mediterranean. It's unclear what the drones will be specifically tasked to do.

Turkey bogged down in Syria as it realigns with Russia
This still image taken from drone footage posted online Monday, Jan. 2, 2017 by the Aamaq News Agency, a media arm of the Islamic State group, purports to shows an aerial image of a neighborhood damaged by Turkish airstrikes in the northern Syrian town of al-Bab, in Aleppo province, Syria. Nearly two months into the assault, Turkey has become bogged down in an unexpectedly bloody fight to retake the Islamic State group's last stronghold in northern Syria. It has been forced to pour in troops, take the lead in the battle from its Syrian allies and reach out to Russia for aerial support -- a move that tests its alliance with the United States and the Syrian opposition.
