No Surprise, Andrej Karpathy Returns to OpenAI

#artificialintelligence

In a rather unsurprising turn of events, former director of AI at Tesla, Andrej Karpathy, has rejoined OpenAI. In his tweet announcing the transition, he said that the developments in AI are inspiring and having benefitted from them, he finds it exciting to "jump back and build". Having been one of the founding members of OpenAI, Andrej left the company in 2017 to join Tesla and support Elon Musk in his endeavours. Musk was also one of the co-founders of OpenAI initially but had later left the Board member position in 2018 "to avoid future conflicts of interests due to Tesla developing AI", OpenAI said. At Tesla, Karpathy undertook multiple AI endeavours and, perhaps most importantly, was his work with Elon Musk on creating "Optimus", the humanoid robot whose prototype was unveiled on AI Day, 30 October, 2022.

8 of the Best Data Science Youtube Channels (2022)

Most of the channels in this list are not on other lists from other articles. Before I start, I would like to preface this article by saying that most of these channels are not on other lists. Another thing is that while you watch these channels remember to code along and remember that what you are watching is not just a video, it is something to interact with. Currently, Machine and Deep Learning are some of the fastest-growing fields. These two fields require engineers to have skills like Statistics, Mathematics, Data Analysis, and Coding Machine Learning and Deep Learning Models.

Tesla Autopilot head Andrej Karpathy leaves as company faces renewed crash probes

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Tesla Director of Artificial Intelligence and Autopilot Andrej Karpathy is leaving the company at a critical time - as it faces renewed probes over crashes and growing scrutiny. Tesla's head of artificial intelligence and autopilot Andrej Karpathy, pictured above at a conference, is leaving the company at a critical time'It's been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways. In that time, Autopilot graduated from lane keeping to city streets and I look forward to seeing the exceptionally strong Autopilot team continue that momentum,' he wrote on Twitter, noting that he has no plans for what's next. Tesla CEO Elon Musk replied to thank him for his work at the company. The leadership change comes at a challenging time, as Tesla faces renewed scrutiny from US regulators over crashes involving drivers who used Autopilot and works to expand the latest version of Full Self Driving (FSD) to a larger number of customers.

Tesla loses its head of AI and vision Andrej Karpathy – a big loss for the Autopilot team

#artificialintelligence

Andrej Karpathy, senior director in charge of AI and computer vision at Tesla, announced that he is leaving the automaker. It is a big loss for Tesla's Autopilot team and self-driving effort. Karpathy joined Tesla more than five years ago as a neural net and computer vision expert. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a big part of Tesla's Autopilot team and the automaker's effort to develop a full self-driving system. As Tesla expanded its effort from self-driving to broader artificial intelligence, Karpathy was promoted to senior director of AI at Tesla.

Tesla Working on Full Self-Driving Mode, Extending AI Lead - AI Trends

#artificialintelligence

Tesla's goal to release its level 5 Full Self Driving (FSD) mode autopilot capability in 2021 was deemed unrealistic by the CEO of competitor Waymo in a recent interview. Tesla is the only autonomous vehicle manufacturer using real-time cameras, rather than pre-mapped Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) to guide vehicle movement. Tesla also uses its own AI chips, developed after early experience with NVIDIA chips. "It is a misconception that you can simply develop a driver-assistance system further until one day you can magically jump to a fully autonomous driving system," stated John Krafcik, CEO of Waymo, the self-driving startup spun off from Google's X lab, in a recent interview with German business magazine Manager Magazin, reported in Observer. Krafcik acknowledged that Tesla "is developing a really good driver assistance system," but very different.

Why Tesla Is Designing Chips to Train Its Self-Driving Tech

WIRED

Now, it's also the latest company to seek an edge in artificial intelligence by making its own silicon chips. At a promotional event last month, Tesla revealed details of a custom AI chip called D1 for training the machine-learning algorithm behind its Autopilot self-driving system. The event focused on Tesla's AI work and featured a dancing human posing as a humanoid robot the company intends to build. Tesla is the latest nontraditional chipmaker to design its own silicon. As AI becomes more important and costly to deploy, other companies that are heavily invested in the technology--including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft--also now design their own chips.

Are You Ready for Vision Transformer (ViT)?

It is applicable not only for creatures but also for technologies. Technologies in data science have been filled with hypes and biased success stories. Having said that, there are technologies that have lead to the growth of data science: Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Since AlexNet in 2012, different architectures of CNNs have brought a tremendous contribution to real business operations and academic researches. Residual Networks (ResNet) by Microsoft Research in 2015 brought a real breakthrough to build "deep" CNNs; however, an honorable retirement of this technology would be approaching.
