Can AI Predict If Your House Is Going To Burn To The Ground?

Standing on the outskirts of Oakland, California, Attila Toth takes in the nearby forested hills. The CEO looks out on what locals call "The Town" and, in the distance, San Francisco, or "The City." Close by, Toth sees tangles of redwood, eucalyptus and oak trees – and the wildfire risk they pose. This "wildland-urban interface" isn't far from the site of the 1991 Oakland Hills Fire, which flared up suddenly in a heavily residential area. Over four days, 3,000 thousand homes were destroyed in one of the city's wealthiest neighborhoods, causing an estimated $1.5 billion in damages ($3.2 billion in today's dollars).

Australia wants AI to handle divorces -- here's why

An online app called Amica is now using artificial intelligence to help separating couples make parenting arrangements and divide their assets. For many people, the coronavirus pandemic has put even the strongest of relationships to the test. A May survey conducted by Relationships Australia found 42% of 739 respondents experienced a negative change in their relationship with their partner under lockdown restrictions. There has also been a surge in the number of couples seeking separation advice. The Australian government has backed the use of Amica for those in such circumstances.

Australian Authorities Want an AI To Settle Your Divorce

#artificialintelligence

For better or worse, there's a good chance your current love life owes something to automation. Even if you're just hooking up with the occasional Tinder fling (which if you are, no judgment), you're still turning to Tinder's black-box algorithms to pick out that fling for you before turning to more black-box algorithms to pick out the best dingy bar to meet them at before turning to more black-box algorithms to figure out what, exactly, should be your date night lewk. If things get serious further down the line, you might turn to another black-box algorithm to plan your entire damn wedding for you. And if it turns out you got married for all the wrong reasons, it turns out there's another set of black boxes you can plug your details into to settle the details of your divorce. Known as "amica," the service was rolled out yesterday by the Australian government as a way to let soon-to-be-exes "make parenting arrangements" and "divide their money and property" without having to go through the hassle of hiring a lawyer to do the heavy lifting.
