Wanderstop review – a wonderful break from the pressure to win

The Guardian

The term "cosy game" typically inspires one of two responses in those of us who play video games regularly. It will either call you in with the promise of soft, resource-management oriented gameplay whose slower pace offers a gentle escape and a bucolic alternative to gunslinging and high-stress adventure. Or it will repel you – as admittedly, it repels me. Cosy is often a kind of code for twee, low-stakes domestic adventures where drama is eschewed in favour of repetitive tasks intended to generate comfort, or imitate lightning-in-a-bottle resource management sims such as Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing. So when faced with Wanderstop, a colourful game in which a fallen warrior trades in her fighting life for managing a tea shop, I was hesitant.

14 unusual video games to discover in 2024

The Guardian

The market is already crammed with open-world multiplayer survival games, but this post-apocalyptic epic adds cosmic horror to the mix. Its huge world is crammed with grotesque Lovecraftian monsters – including a living bus like the benevolent catbus in My Neighbour Totoro, but just horrible. You use an axe, dodges and a pistol to interrupt your powerful enemies' attacks and gain the upper hand – but this animated world is much brighter and less bleak, inspired by its developers' antipodean surroundings. I have never seen anything quite like this forthcoming game from Capcom: you control a warrior protecting a priestess as she slowly dances her way through monster-infested Japanese mountain scenes, purifying her surroundings as you go. During the day you rescue people and station your troops; at night you attack the monsters, hoping to keep her safe.

Artificial Intelligence enabled Smart Learning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a discipline of computer science that deals with machine intelligence. It is essential to bring AI into the context of learning because it helps in analysing the enormous amounts of data that is collected from individual students, teachers and academic staff. The major priorities of implementing AI in education are making innovative use of existing digital technologies for learning, and teaching practices that significantly improve traditional educational methods. The main problem with traditional learning is that it cannot be suited to every student in class. Some students may grasp the concepts well, while some may have difficulties in understanding them and some may be more auditory or visual learners. The World Bank report on education has indicated that the learning gap created by this problem causes many students to drop out (World Development Report, 2018). Personalised learning has been able to solve this grave problem.

Intelligent Tutoring Systems (a Decades-old Application of AI in Education)

#artificialintelligence

In the last few years, numerous developments have led to a growing awareness of the maturity of Artificial Intelligence. Self-driving cars and personal assistants like Alexa and Siri are some of the consumer-facing technologies that have helped to fuel this awareness. This knowledge can also bring with it a certain dystopian fear about robots and technology "taking over". While we should always strive to be cautious with new technologies, our concerns should also be tempered by understanding the long curve of development that typically precedes these seemingly overnight maturings of technology. I've been reading Artificial Intelligence in Education, a 2019 publication by Wayne Holmes, Maya Bialik, and Charles Fadel, that explores implications of AI in the realm of teaching and learning.

Australian Legal Tech Association Launch Demo Day Wrap-Up

#artificialintelligence

It was always going to be a momentous week for legal technology with the world's largest Global Legal Hackathon taking place in over 40 cities. But for the Aussies, it was a double whammy with ALTA's inaugural event and the launch of its Demo Day series, showcasing some of Australia's best legal technology start-ups all on one stage, in very lawyer-like six minute-long demonstrations. Hosted by Macquarie Bank at their Melbourne and Sydney headquarters and also supported by industry heavyweights Janders Dean and Elevate Services, the dual city tour was attended by a diverse variety of industry stakeholders including in-house legal departments, government, law societies, academics, multi-nationals and'techies', whilst Big Law right through to NewLaw and even'tiny' law were all well represented. What emerged from the two days was the incredible depth of our home-grown talent with many commenting on the impressive diversity; the companies showing off everything from data-driven tools for in-house teams to even an AI powered'law firm without lawyers'; but most importantly, a true sense of community was born. The ideas, conversations and relationships that transpired during the coffee breaks, in the conference rooms, and that continued out the doors well after the final demo will have a lasting effect.
