Meet Japan's drone traffic management system

#artificialintelligence

A key part of realizing the future of commercial drones will be drone traffic management: An integrated way to manage airspace for UAV. That's the goal of a recent trial in Japan led by NEDO (National Institute of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) to develop a drone traffic management system for multiple drone operators to fly in the same airspace safely. The trial, closely watched in the industry, brings together several prominent companies and consortiums, including ANRA Technologies, BIRD INITIATIVE, NEC Corporation, All Nippon Airways (ANA), and other partners. It will take place above Wakkanai City in Japan using ANRA's airspace and delivery management software platforms. The testbed is part of an ongoing R&D effort led by NEDO with the aim of integrating drone traffic management and creating a blueprint for a nationwide traffic management system.

AirMap, the world's leading drone operations platform is poised to expand all over the world and David Hose, the CEO of AirMap is in a great position to lead them forward. "The growth here is really interesting- growth is outpacing the forecasts," says Hose. Plus, the world is a lot more attached to the technology and people are well aware that drones will soon become a part of our daily lives. To make it a reality may require some time, but its happening. "By and large this industry started as an outgrowth of the hobby," says Hose. Still, rules and regulations are needed to reach the potential and have the safe and legal flights.

AirMap, DigiCert to issue digital certificates for drones

PCWorld

Drones will start getting digital identification certificates under a new service being launched on Tuesday that hopes to bring trust and verification to the skies. The Drone IDs will be SSL/TLS certificates from DigiCert issued through AirMap, a provider of drone flight information data, and will first be available to users of Intel's Aero drone platform. Under the system, drone owners receive the digital ID in the form of an SSL/TLS certificate when they register for AirMap services. The ID is different from the identification number issued to drone owners by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and isn't part of any government scheme. Initially, the IDs will be used to authenticate drones into AirMap's system, which provides data about local weather and obstacles that could impede a drone's flight.
