Resource-constrained image generation and visual understanding: an interview with Aniket Roy

In the latest in our series of interviews meeting the AAAI/SIGAI Doctoral Consortium participants, we caught up with Aniket Roy to find out more about his research on generative models for computer vision tasks. Tell us a bit about your PhD - where did you study, and what was the topic of your research? I recently completed my PhD in Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, where I worked under the supervision of Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Rama Chellappa. My research primarily focused on developing methods for resource-constrained image generation and visual understanding. In particular, I explored how modern generative models can be adapted to operate efficiently while maintaining strong performance.

#AAAI2026 invited talk: machine learning for particle physics

Daniel Whiteson is a particle physicist, who uses machine learning and statistical tools to analyze high-energy particle collisions. He is also a dedicated science communicator, having published books and comics, and is co-host of a science podcast. In his invited talk at the Fortieth AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI-26), Daniel shared insights on both these aspects of his career. Daniel works at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, primarily looking at proton-proton collisions, which occur at 13 TeV, a massive 13,000 times the energy stored in a single proton. The majority of collisions result in known particles, such as electrons or muons.


2026 AI Index Report released

The ninth edition of the Artificial Intelligence Index Report was published on 13 April 2026. Released on a yearly basis, the aim of the document is to provide readers with accurate, rigorously validated, and globally-sourced data to give insights into the progress of AI and its potential impact on society. The 2026 AI Index Report comprises nine chapters, covering: research and development, technical performance, responsible AI, economy, science, medicine, education, policy and governance, and public opinion. AI capability is accelerating and reaching more people than ever. Model performance continues to improve against benchmarks, and 80% of university students now use generative AI.

Interview with Sukanya Mandal: Synthesizing multi-modal knowledge graphs for smart city intelligence

In their paper LLMasMMKG: LLM Assisted Synthetic Multi-Modal Knowledge Graph Creation For Smart City Cognitive Digital Twins, which was published in the AAAI Fall Symposium series, and introduced an approach that leverages large language models to automate the construction of synthetic multi-modal knowledge graphs specifically designed for a smart city cognitive digital twin. Here, Sukanya tells us more about cognitive digital twins, the framework they employed, and some key results. Could you start by introducing the idea of smart city cognitive digital twins and why this is an interesting area for study? Cities grow increasingly complex and interconnected, demanding sophisticated tools for management. A cognitive digital twin (CDT) serves as an AI-enabled virtual replica that models the dynamic interplay of physical and social systems, enabling simulations, predictions, and optimized operations.


AIhub coffee corner: AI, kids, and the future – "generation AI"

This month we tackle the topic of young people and what AI tools mean for their future. Joining the conversation this time are: Sanmay Das (Virginia Tech), Tom Dietterich (Oregon State University), Sabine Hauert (University of Bristol), Michael Littman (Brown University), and Ella Scallan (AIhub). As AI tools have become ubiquitous, we've seen growing concern and increasing coverage about how the use of such tools from a formative age might affect children. What do you think the impact will be and what skills might young people need to navigate this AI world? I met up with a bunch of high school friends when I was last in Switzerland and they were all wondering what their kids should study. They were wondering if they should do social science, seeing as AI tools have become adept at many tasks, such as coding, writing, art, etc. I think that we need social sciences, but that we also need people who know the technology and who can continue developing it. I say they should continue doing whatever they're interested in and those jobs will evolve and they'll look different, but there will still be a whole wealth of different types of jobs.


Reinforcement learning applied to autonomous vehicles: an interview with Oliver Chang
