AI-Generated Faces in the Real World: A Large-Scale Case Study of Twitter Profile Images

Recent advances in the field of generative artificial intelligence (AI) have blurred the lines between authentic and machine-generated content, making it almost impossible for humans to distinguish between such media. One notable consequence is the use of AI-generated images for fake profiles on social media. While several types of disinformation campaigns and similar incidents have been reported in the past, a systematic analysis has been lacking. In this work, we conduct the first large-scale investigation of the prevalence of AI-generated profile pictures on Twitter. We tackle the challenges of a real-world measurement study by carefully integrating various data sources and designing a multi-stage detection pipeline. Our analysis of nearly 15 million Twitter profile pictures shows that 0.052% were artificially generated, confirming their notable presence on the platform. We comprehensively examine the characteristics of these accounts and their tweet content, and uncover patterns of coordinated inauthentic behavior. The results also reveal several motives, including spamming and political amplification campaigns. Our research reaffirms the need for effective detection and mitigation strategies to cope with the potential negative effects of generative AI in the future.

Finding AI-Generated Faces in the Wild

AI-based image generation has continued to rapidly improve, producing increasingly more realistic images with fewer obvious visual flaws. AI-generated images are being used to create fake online profiles which in turn are being used for spam, fraud, and disinformation campaigns. As the general problem of detecting any type of manipulated or synthesized content is receiving increasing attention, here we focus on a more narrow task of distinguishing a real face from an AI-generated face. This is particularly applicable when tackling inauthentic online accounts with a fake user profile photo. We show that by focusing on only faces, a more resilient and general-purpose artifact can be detected that allows for the detection of AI-generated faces from a variety of GAN- and diffusion-based synthesis engines, and across image resolutions (as low as 128 x 128 pixels) and qualities.

Humans stumped on difference between real or AI-generated images: study

FOX News

People in Texas sounded off on AI job displacement, with half of the people who spoke to Fox News convinced that the tech will rob them of work. Humans have historically been excellent at identifying faces and photos compared to computers, but the advent of artificial intelligence-generated photos is throwing a curveball at humans, according to a new study that examines how people perceive fake images versus real ones. Tech experts have been warning that hyperrealistic images generated by AI could lead to the proliferation of misinformation online and cybersecurity issues. Last month, for example, panic spread after an AI-generated photo that apparently showed an explosion at the Pentagon went viral, leading to the stock market taking a short dip. Researchers in Australia examined how human brains perceive and differentiate realistic AI-generated photos using both behavioral testing and neuroimaging experiments.

Scammers used AI-generated faces to pose as a Boston law firm

Nicole Palmer is a lawyer who graduated from Columbia University. Her profile states that she "specializes in the application and protection of industrial design" and has "been building her career successfully for 30 years." The only problem is that she doesn't exist. And she helped me uncover an online scam operation involved in shady activities, including extorting backlinks from bloggers and website owners. I've spent a good part of the past week investigating Arthur Davidson, the so-called "law firm" Nicole works for.

1,000-plus AI-generated LinkedIn faces discovered in probe

#artificialintelligence

Two Stanford researchers have fallen down a LinkedIn rabbit hole, finding over 1,000 fake profiles using AI-generated faces at the bottom. Renée DiResta and Josh Goldstein from the Stanford Internet Observatory made the discovery after DiResta was messaged by a profile reported to belong to a "Keenan Ramsey". It looked like a normal software sales pitch at first glance, but upon further investigation, it became apparent that Ramsey was an entirely fictitious person. While the picture appeared to be a standard corporate headshot, it also included multiple red flags that point to it being an AI-generated face like those generated by websites like This Person Does Not Exist. DiResta was specifically tipped off by the alignment of Ramsey's eyes (the dead center of the photo), her earrings (she was only wearing one) and her hair, several bits of which blurred into the background.

Chrome Extension Can Detect Fake Profile Pictures with 99.29% Accuracy

#artificialintelligence

V7 Labs has created a new artificial intelligence-based (AI) software that works as a Google Chrome extension that is capable of detecting artificially generated profile pictures -- like the ones above -- with a claimed 99.28% accuracy. V7 Labs is a software company that designs products made to automate visual tasks. The company says that the world relies on visual decision making and it is working towards making deep learning more robust and easier to develop so that any business can implement state-of-the-art AI from a single platform. Alberto Rizzoli, one of V7 Labs' founders, describes the new software as designed to help curb misinformation online. He has demonstrates the feature in a video published on Loom.

Deepfakes are being used to push anti-Ukraine disinformation

#artificialintelligence

Influence operations with ties to Russia and Belarus have been found using deepfakes to push anti-Ukraine disinformation. Last week, AI News reported on the release of a study that found humans can generally no longer distinguish between real and AI-generated "deepfake" faces. As humans, we're somewhat trained to believe what we see with our eyes. Many believed that it was only a matter of time before Russia took advantage of deepfakes and our human psychology to take its vast disinformation campaigns to the next level. Facebook and Twitter removed two anti-Ukraine "covert influence operations" over the weekend.

Humans struggle to distinguish between real and AI-generated faces

#artificialintelligence

According to a new paper, AI-generated faces have become so advanced that humans now cannot distinguish between real and fake more often than not. "Our evaluation of the photorealism of AI-synthesized faces indicates that synthesis engines have passed through the uncanny valley and are capable of creating faces that are indistinguishable--and more trustworthy--than real faces," the researchers explained. Video, audio, text, and imagery generated by generative adversarial networks (GANs) are increasingly being used for nonconsensual intimate imagery, financial fraud, and disinformation campaigns. The generator will start with random pixels and will keep improving the image to avoid penalisation from the discriminator. This process continues until the discriminator can no longer distinguish a synthesised face from a real one.
