Comparative Experimentation of Accuracy Metrics in Automated Medical Reporting: The Case of Otitis Consultations

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to automatically generate medical reports based on transcripts of medical consultations. The aim is to reduce the administrative burden that healthcare professionals face. The accuracy of the generated reports needs to be established to ensure their correctness and usefulness. There are several metrics for measuring the accuracy of AI generated reports, but little work has been done towards the application of these metrics in medical reporting. A comparative experimentation of 10 accuracy metrics has been performed on AI generated medical reports against their corresponding General Practitioner's (GP) medical reports concerning Otitis consultations. The number of missing, incorrect, and additional statements of the generated reports have been correlated with the metric scores. In addition, we introduce and define a Composite Accuracy Score which produces a single score for comparing the metrics within the field of automated medical reporting. Findings show that based on the correlation study and the Composite Accuracy Score, the ROUGE-L and Word Mover's Distance metrics are the preferred metrics, which is not in line with previous work. These findings help determine the accuracy of an AI generated medical report, which aids the development of systems that generate medical reports for GPs to reduce the administrative burden.

In AI circles, the end of the calendar year means the rollout of annual reports aimed at defining progress, impact, and areas for improvement. The AI Index is due out in the coming weeks, as is CB Insights' assessment of global AI startup activity, but two reports -- both called The State of AI -- have already been released. Last week, McKinsey released its global survey on the state of AI, a report now in its third year. Interviews with executives and a survey of business respondents found a potential widening of the gap between businesses that apply AI and those that do not.

State of AI report: what's next for European tech?
General purpose artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming a game for Big Tech and Big Government in the US and China, leaving Europe trailing in the dust. But AI is also a game for nimble startups that can creatively apply the technology to particular business niches, giving Europe a chance to flourish. Those are two of the main takeaways from the third annual 176-slide State of AI report, written by Nathan Benaich and Ian Hogarth, two of the most active angel investors in the UK in AI startups. They also highlight the investment momentum that is building behind European AI startups in the life sciences and military fields, in particular. One of the most striking features of AI research, as shown in the report, is how it is being driven by huge amounts of capital, data and computing power, meaning that only the biggest players can lead in many fields.

Appen Limited, a leading provider of high-quality training data for organizations that build effective AI systems at scale, released its annual State of AI Report for 2020. The report highlights increasing C-suite involvement and investment in enterprise AI projects as well as data being a key challenge as AI models get more frequent updates in production. The report also reveals the recent acceleration of AI strategies in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the report, nearly 75 percent of businesses now consider AI critical to their success, and AI continues to grow in importance across companies of various sizes and industries. Yet, almost 50 percent of those who responded to the 2020 State of AI survey feel their company is behind on their AI journey, suggesting a critical gap exists between the strategic need and the ability to execute.
Automation and AI sound similar, but may have vastly different impacts on the future of work
Last November, Brookings published a report on artificial intelligence's impact on the workplace that immediately raised eyebrows. Many readers, journalists, and even experts were perplexed by the report's primary finding: that, for the most part, it is better-paid, better-educated white-collar workers who are most exposed to AI's potential economic disruption. This conclusion--by authors Mark Muro, Robert Maxim, and Jacob Whiton--seemed to fly in the face of the popular understanding of technology's future effects on workers. For years, we've been hearing about how these advancements will force mainly blue-collar, lower-income workers out of jobs, as robotics and technology slowly consume those industries. In an article about the November report, The Mercury News outlined this discrepancy: "The study released Wednesday by the Brookings Institution seems to contradict findings from previous studies--including Brookings' own--that showed lower-skilled workers will be most affected by robots and automation, which can involve AI."
