The popular music platform Spotify is launching a new AI-powered feature, empowering users to have their own personal DJ on their mobile phones. Spotify is a music application that offers a personalized navigation experience to the user. It is even considered particularly effective in this. Its functions, such as Discover Weekly or Wrapped, help everyone listen to and discover songs that belong to their musical tastes. Now, Spotify will take this usage one step further.

Spotify has bigger plans for the technology behind its new AI DJ feature after seeing positive consumer reaction to the new feature. Launched just ahead of the company's Stream On event in L.A. last week, the AI DJ curates a personalized selection of music combined with spoken commentary delivered in a realistic-sounding, AI-generated voice. But under the hood, the feature leverages the latest in AI technologies and large language models, as well as generative voice -- all of which are layered on top of Spotify's existing investments in personalization and machine learning. These new tools don't necessarily have to be limited to a single feature, Spotify believes, which is why it's now experimenting with other applications of the technology. Though the highlight from Spotify's Stream On event was the mobile app's revamp, which now focuses on TikTok-like discovery feeds for music, podcasts, and audiobooks, the AI DJ is now a prominent part of the streaming service's new experience.

"You may not know this," the DJ coos patronizingly, "but this song turns 30 this year." The only difference is this DJ is not a real person. AI DJ is the next move in Spotify's never-ending goal to "personalize" our listening experiences. Like its Discover Weekly new music playlist, or its end-of-year Wrapped recap, the AI DJ curates a stream of songs it thinks I'll like based on my listening history. Along with the tunes, I get segues of "commentary" from a male AI voice, which bursts with the forced friendliness of an over-invested high school guidance counselor.

Even the very best radio DJ can be annoying. No matter how smooth their voice is, they still break in between songs--or worse, talk over them. Their little interruptions, popping into your life at unexpected and often inopportune times, remind you they're there. They can be annoying, sure, but they're also comforting, because they're friendly and familiar humans. Of course, nobody listens to the radio anymore.

Now, the tech giant has launched its most personalised service, in the form of an AI DJ. The DJ, dubbed X, features a'stunningly realistic voice' and creates personalised mixes based on your music taste. 'The DJ is a personalized AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you,' Spotify explains. 'This feature, first rolling out in beta, will deliver a curated lineup of music alongside commentary around the tracks and artists we think you'll like in a stunningly realistic voice.'
