Huawei today held a session where it talked about the possibilities of Artificial Intelligence in smartphones and how the company is looking to make the best use of that technology. The session saw James Lu, Director of AI product management at Huawei Consumer Business Group talking about the Chinese company's plans for its future smartphones and the use of AI in them. Last year, Huawei introduced the first AI processor called the Kirin 970 that featured a Neural Processing Unit(NPU). With it came upgrades to the ability to zoom further while not losing the clarity of the image, better integration of cloud-based and device based AI making the experience better. And now with the technology in hand to recognize and differentiate objects of hardware created by Huawei and using Tensorflow and Machine Learning, Huawei has come up with its own APIs that govern the Huawei Mobile AI.

On the surface it looks like a simple public cloud infrastructure deal. But stand back from productivity app Evernote's recently announced migration of its entire infrastructure onto Google's Cloud Platform and there's a much bigger story to tell. Productivity apps are many, but Evernote's 200 million plus customers make it one of the most popular. Allowing users to store private notes on the cloud, add multimedia, and access everything from multiple devices (recently restricted to two unless you pay a fee), Evernote's back-end now contains about five billion notes. Until now, all of that was held on Evernote's own private cloud infrastructure, but from early October it's all going to be migrated to Google's Cloud Platform. Evernote's notes were already easy to integrate with Google Drive, but this goes much deeper than the mass adoption of the cloud as a place to store data.

Elon Musk is getting involved in AI, too, by supporting OpenAI, a non-profit research company focused on advancing digital intelligence for the common good. "Elon Musk has launched the OpenAI project with a star-studded list of backers – Palantir CEO Peter Thiel, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and Y Combinator president Sam Altman," says an impressed Jones. OpenAI is headed up by machine learning expert Ilya Sutskever, ex-Google Brain Team member, and has just opened the OpenAI Gym in beta to help developers working with'reinforced learning', a type of machine learning that's central to AI. Essentially, it's about getting software to alter its behaviour in a dynamic environment in order to get a reward (you can't give Siri a biscuit every time she'found this on the web'). The arrival of AI means a changing of the guard in the tech industry, with disruption, innovation – and the complete domination of the cloud. Expertise, not investment, will become king.
