Facebook enlists AI tech to help prevent suicide

#artificialintelligence

Now Facebook is ready, the company announced on Wednesday, to take a first and significant step in building a safer and more supportive Facebook community by significantly strengthening its own suicide prevention tools (Facebook has had suicide reporting and tools for a decade). Facebook is also testing a pattern recognition system, that will identify posts that include suicidal thoughts. In addition and perhaps in acknowledgement of the Live.Me video tragedy, Facebook is also introducing suicide prevention tools to Facebook Live posts. The updated system will also offer the option to connect directly with someone from several suicide prevention organizations including Crisis Text Line and the National Suicide Prevention Line.

When Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg sound the same dire warning about jobs, it's time to listen

@machinelearnbot

Some 38% of jobs in the U.S. are at "high risk" of being replaced by robots and artificial intelligence over the next 15 years, a separate estimate by consulting and accounting firm PwC found, which is still lower than Germany (35%) and the U.K. (30%). They include composers and artists, nurse practitioners, home health aides, elder care specialists, child care workers, engineers, teachers and, finally, human resources executives, a report released earlier this month by careers firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas concluded. As MarketWatch previously reported, there's an 83% chance that automation will replace a job that pays $20 per hour, according to a White House report released last year. Traditional energy and energy efficiency sectors employ around 6.4 million Americans, according to the 2017 U.S. Energy and Employment Report.

This new breed of supply chain is more connected, intelligent, scalable and rapid than traditional supply chain management. In today's global and connected economy, digital supply chains are the on-ramp to innovation and success.

Bill Gates also weighed in, calling intelligent machines dangerous and implying that they may be more trouble than they're worth. Instead, we should feel proud of and satisfied by the enormous progress that we've achieved in AI thus far, especially if we think of the incremental improvements that we'll see in information management based on automatic understanding in even just the next 10 years. Bio: Marco Varone, founder, president and CTO of Expert System, is one of the leading experts on semantic technology and natural language processing. He has worked in the field application of semantic technology in every advanced context: search engines, text analytics, natural language interfaces, Q & A systems, automatic categorization and many others.

Zuckerberg was taking questions live from Facebook users Tuesday as part of a demo of his company's live video feature, which lets anyone launch live global broadcasts using their web cameras. Seinfeld, being Seinfeld, appeared less interested in talking about connecting the world and new products and more interested in probingZuckerberg's personal life. The break is small and Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, isn't wearing a cast. The comedian noted that Facebook staff had repeatedly warned him about the CEO's broken arm as he wandered around Facebook's Menlo Park, California, campus on Tuesday.
