AI diagnostics are coming

#artificialintelligence

Earlier this year, artificial intelligence scientist Sebastian Thrun and colleagues at Stanford University demonstrated that a "deep learning" algorithm was capable of diagnosing potentially cancerous skin lesions as accurately as a board-certified dermatologist. The cancer finding, reported in Nature, was part of a stream of reports this year offering an early glimpse into what could be a new era of "diagnosis by software," in which artificial intelligence aids doctors--or even competes with them. Unlike more-traditional vision software, where a programmer defines rules--for example, a stop sign has eight sides--in deep learning the algorithm finds the rules itself, but often without leaving an audit trail to explain its decisions. These covered 2,032 different diseases and included 1,942 images of confirmed skin cancers.

A timeline of when AI could outperform humans

Attorney General Jeff Sessions suggested he could resign as tensions with President Trump rose, ABC News' Jonathan Karl reports. The NYT's Maggie Haberman later confirmed Karl's report, adding that Trump declined Sessions' offer. The source of the tension: Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe, which he did not consult with Trump about ahead of time. Two sources close to the president say he lashed out repeatedly at the attorney general in private meetings, blaming the recusal for the expansion of the Russian investigation… but sources say the frustration runs both ways."

How AI is transforming the future of fintech

These use neural networks to predict behaviour, financial indicators and so on. "In the history of finance there has always been fraud," says WIRED Money 2017 speakerJoern Leogrande, executive vice president of mobile services at Wirecard. But from a retailer's perspective, you have to do something about this because what we see - and this is pretty obvious - is the kind of power and investment technology companies like Amazon are stepping into… There is tremendous change coming." Fintech aspires to the same promise, and services like Wirecard, Nutmeg, Schmidhuber's lab's work on AI that can outthink a human banker or trader by a thousand-fold, are examples of how it can deliver.

Three years and $8 billion later, Microsoft is slashing 1,850 jobs at Nokia. LibreOffice is free and has many of the same features as Microsoft Office. SAN FRANCISCO -- Microsoft has launched a venture capital fund that will invest in companies advancing cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. Microsoft Ventures will place staffers in existing offices here as well as in Seattle, New York and Tel Aviv, according to a blog post Tuesday from corporate vice president Nagraj Kashyap, who will run the new investment fund along with Peggy Johnson, Microsoft's executive vice president for business development. The move is an echo of existing funds operated by Google, Intel and others, which allow such giants to get in on the ground floor of companies that can boost their particular ecosystems.

Washington, D.C. - IBM, a pioneer in the advancement of artificial intelligence, today welcomed the release of a White House report on the future and promise of this exciting technology: "We commend the Administration, and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in particular, for launching an open and inclusive dialogue that helped shape today's report. The document recognizes what IBM has believed all along, that artificial intelligence (AI), or cognitive computing systems like IBM Watson, will jump start economic opportunity and help solve some of humanity's biggest challenges. Embedding ethical training into computer science education, as the report recommends, is a positive way to prepare the next generation of technology experts to appropriately guide the advancement of AI systems. Cybersecurity is one area in particular where IBM agrees that AI can be a true game-changer, and one where we are actively preparing IBM Watson to make a real and tangible difference in the push to better defend America's digital networks.
