ChatGPT is turning Reddit usernames into images, and the results are unhinged
In the latest viral ChatGPT image trend, Reddit users are asking the AI chatbot to create an image based on their username. And if you think of some of the wildest Reddit usernames you've encountered, you won't be surprised that the results are wild. The AI-generated images are taking over the /chatgpt subreddit this week, as Redditors experiment with the prompt, "make me an image based on my Reddit name." For users like goodnaturedheathen, the results are cute and charming. For BeachedWhiteMale (pictured above), the results are, well, about what you'd expect.

Google is readying its AI Mode search tool for primetime, whether you like it or not
It sure looks like Google is prepping its controversial AI mode for primetime. This week, some Google users noticed an AI Mode button showing up instead of Google's iconic "I'm feeling lucky" button on the homepage. And today, a Mashable reporter spotted "AI Mode" appearing as an option on search results pages, alongside stalwart Google tools like News, Shopping, Images, and Videos. Notably, this reporter did not proactively sign up to participate in AI Mode through Google Labs. That suggests Google is testing the feature for select users.
xAI investigates, Sam Altman roasts Grok's 'White Genocide' glitch
Yesterday, we reported on a bizarre glitch from xAI's chatbot Grok, which began adding commentary about "white genocide" in South Africa into random conversations about baseball and HBO Max. And last night, xAI -- the artificial intelligence arm of Elon Musk's X -- finally admitted it had a problem. In a post on X, the company promised to conduct a full investigation into the glitch, blaming it on "an unauthorized modification" that directed Grok "to provide a specific response on a political topic." Coincidentally, Musk, the leader of xAI and a Grok power user, has a known interest in the subject. In fact, he spent yesterday tweeting about white genocide in South Africa, his home country.
You can talk to Darth Vader in Fortnite now thanks to generative AI
Fortnite is now in the business of resurrecting the dead, apparently. On Friday, developer Epic Games announced in a blog post that Darth Vader is back in Fortnite as a recruitable boss character in the game's primary Battle Royale mode. He can be recruited to fight alongside you and your friends, but here's where things get strange: You can voice chat with Darth Vader and he'll respond using an AI approximation of the late James Earl Jones' voice. James Earl felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars, and he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it. We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character.
New to streaming: How to watch A Minecraft Movie at home
The video game with the cult-following among Gen Z and Alpha took over the box office last month. Now the blockbuster film adapted from the game, dubbed A Minecraft Movie, is headed to households everywhere. From creepers and piglins to villages and the Nether, the film is full of staples from Mojang's crafting game. But that doesn't mean you need to have played the game before to see it (although a primer wouldn't hurt). It stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Hansen and is directed by Jared Hess -- the man known for Napoleon Dynamite, the kookiest film of the 2000s.
Deep love or deepfake: Dating in the time of AI
Beth Hyland thought she had met the love of her life on Tinder. In reality, the Michigan-based administrative assistant had been manipulated by an online scam artist who posed as a French man named "Richard," used deepfake video on Skype calls and posted photos of another man to pull off his con. Deepfakes -- manipulated video or audio made using artificial intelligence to look and sound real -- are often difficult to detect without specialized tools.
Seven-Eleven testing delivery robots in Japan
Amid a serious truck driver shortage, convenience store chain Seven-Eleven Japan began a trial delivery service using robots on public roads in a western Tokyo suburb on Monday. In the experimental project involving two stores in the city of Hachioji, two robots at each outlet carry items ordered through the 7NOW delivery service app. The four-wheeled box-type robots, which can travel up to 6 kph, are designed to run on sidewalks while following traffic lights and dodging obstacles. After conducting the tests until February next year, Seven-Eleven Japan will consider the feasibility of the robot delivery service, which is expected to help the company cope with a driver shortage and better serve older customers who have difficulty going out shopping.
