Amazon's AGI Lab Reveals Its First Work: Advanced AI Agents

WIRED

Amazon is still seen as a bit of a laggard in the race to develop advanced artificial intelligence, but it has quietly created a lab that is now setting records when it comes to AI performance. Amazon's AGI SF Lab, which is located in San Francisco and dedicated to building artificial general intelligence, or AI that surpasses the capabilities of humans, revealed the first fruits of its work today: A new AI model capable of powering some of the most advanced AI agents available anywhere. The new model, called Amazon Nova Act, outperforms ones from OpenAI and Anthropic on several benchmarks designed to gauge the intelligence and aptitude of AI agents, Amazon says. On the benchmarks GroundUI Web and ScreenSpot, Amazon Nova Act performs better than Claude 3.7 Sonnet and OpenAI Computer Use Agent. A major part of Amazon's plan to compete in the AI market is to focus on building agents, and the new model's abilities reflect its efforts to build a generation of tools that can measure up to the very best available.

Authors call for UK government to hold Meta accountable for copyright infringement

The Guardian

The letter asked Lisa Nandy, the secretary of state for culture, media and sport, to summon Meta senior executives to parliament. "There is a longstanding contractual obligation that when third parties make use of an author's work they compensate us," said McDermid when asked why she signed the letter. "Adaptation, translation, photocopying โ€“ they all accept the duty to recompense us for making their work possible. "I'm a crime writer โ€“ I understand theft when I see it. And by using pirated material, Meta are stealing from us twice over.

Underwater camera set up to film Loch Ness Monster in 1970s discovered

BBC News

The UK's National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has been carrying out trials of marine autonomous underwater vehicles for almost 10 years. NOC's Matt Kingsland said: "At 230m (754ft) deep, Loch Ness is an ideal location to testing our robotics, their sensors and systems, before they're deployed in the deep ocean to help answer the big questions we have. "While this wasn't a find we expected to make, but we're happy that this piece of Nessie hunting history can be shared and perhaps at least the mystery of who left it in the loch can be solved." The film, camera and its housing have been handed to The Loch Ness Centre, in Drumnadrochit, near to where it was found.

The Download: generative AI therapy, and the future of 23andMe's genetic data

MIT Technology Review

June 2022 Across the world, video cameras have become an accepted feature of urban life. Many cities in China now have dense networks of them, and London and New Delhi aren't far behind. Now France is playing catch-up. Concerns have been raised throughout the country. But the surveillance rollout has met special resistance in Marseille, France's second-biggest city. It's unsurprising, perhaps, that activists are fighting back against the cameras, highlighting the surveillance system's overreach and underperformance.

Microsoft's free AI skills training 'Fest' starts next week - anyone can sign up

ZDNet

I know you've heard of gamification, but have you ever heard of festification? That's what Microsoft will be doing in April and May, with the Microsoft AI Skills Fest. It's a little odd, but it also looks like it might be a heck of a lot of fun. I've written a lot about Microsoft over the years. I've mocked its product naming.

Amazon's Spring Sale ends soon, and I want this heavily discounted ELEGOO robot kit more than I should

Mashable

SAVE 29: As of March 31, the ELEGOO Tumbller Robot Kit is 55.99 -- 29 off its 84.99 list price in the Amazon Spring Sale. It's the final hours of Amazon's Spring Sale, and the clock is ticking down on deals I didn't know I needed until 10 minutes ago. It's a self-balancing, LED-blinking, obstacle-dodging STEM toy that's somehow only 55.99 (down from 84.99), and I'm seriously considering buying one just to justify my Prime membership. Once you build it using the step-by-step illustrated manual (which even I could probably follow without crying), it comes to life with features like auto-follow, bouncing mode, and a light show straight out of a Daft Punk concert. You can even control it via an app, so naturally, your phone becomes a robot remote.

Mashable

When Bruce Reed served in the Biden administration as the president's deputy chief of staff, he led the effort on working with leading AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI on voluntary comittments to ensure the safety of their products. Reed has since left the White House, but he's not finished with AI, a technology he described to Mashable as "exciting, amazing, sometimes terrifying." He will continue working at Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization that supports children and parents as they navigate media and technology. Popularly known for its media ratings of children's content, including video games, TV shows, and movies, the nonprofit also conducts research and advocacy. Reed, a veteran of three Democratic presidential administrations, will lead Common Sense AI, which advocates for more comprehensive AI legislation in California.
