Apple smart glasses could come as soon as 2026

Just a few days after Google unveiled its AR smart glasses, a new report suggests Apple may soon release a similar product. The iPhone maker is apparently planning on launching its long-rumored smart glasses in 2026, Bloomberg reported on Thursday. According to the report, the glasses will have microphones, speakers, and cameras built in, with an emphasis on AI features. This would allow users to ask for directions, do live language translation, and listen to music, among other things. However, one thing to note is that these glasses will more than likely not feature AR support of any kind, unlike Google's recently announced Android XR glasses.


Breaking encryption with a quantum computer just got 20 times easier

While this is still well beyond the capabilities of existing quantum computers, this new estimate is 20 times lower than previously thought, suggesting the day encryption is cracked is closer than we think.


QuACK: Accelerating Gradient-Based Quantum Optimization with Koopman Operator Learning

Quantum optimization, a key application of quantum computing, has traditionally been stymied by the linearly increasing complexity of gradient calculations with an increasing number of parameters. This work bridges the gap between Koopman operator theory, which has found utility in applications because it allows for a linear representation of nonlinear dynamical systems, and natural gradient methods in quantum optimization, leading to a significant acceleration of gradient-based quantum optimization.

We implement our attack framework using Python 3.7.3 and PyTorch 1.7.1 We run our experiments on a machine equipped with Intel i5-8400 2.80GHz 6-core processors, 16 GB of RAM, and four Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti GPUs. To compute the Hessian trace, we use a virtual machine equipped with Intel E5-2686v4 2.30GHz 8-core processors, 64 GB of RAM, and an Nvidia Tesla V100 GPU. For all our attacks in 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5, we use symmetric quantization for the weights and asymmetric quantization for the activation--a default configuration in many deep learning frameworks supporting quantization. Quantization granularity is layer-wise for both the weights and activation. In 4.4 where we examine the transferability of our attacks, we use the same quantization granularity that the original studies describe [Choukroun et al., 2019, Zhao et al., 2019, Banner et al., 2019] while re-training clean models.

Meta is reportedly working on facial recognition for its AI glasses

Diminished tech privacy appears to be another ripple effect from Trump 2.0. The Information reported on Wednesday that Meta has changed its tune on facial recognition. After considering but ultimately bailing on the technology for the first version of its smart glasses, the company is now actively working on wearables that can identify nearby faces. Remember when being a "Glasshole" was considered a faux pas? According to The Information, Meta has recently discussed adding software to its smart glasses that scans bystanders' faces and identifies people by name.


XeSS, Intel's game-boosting DLSS rival, is now in over 200 games

Intel said Wednesday that the company is adding its XeSS 2 technology to even more games, including top-tier titles like Diablo IV and Assassin's Creed Shadows -- pushing them into the "definitely playable" category by increasing framerates up to a whopping four times higher. As part of the announcement, Intel also revealed that some sort of XeSS support now exists in over 200 PC games. XeSS 2 was added in conjunction with the 250 Intel Arc B580 ("Battlemage") architecture at the end of 2024, a "budget" graphics card that certainly helped alleviate some of the sticker shock that accompanied cards from AMD and especially Nvidia. It combines upscaling, frame generation, and latency in reduction, and doesn't necessarily require an Intel GPU, either. The most important thing about XeSS is that it applies additional frames where it's really needed -- at the low end.


'Computer, do this.' Windows PCs take a cue from Star Trek's AI

It's been one future that sci-fi has promised since Star Trek. Microsoft now says that that future is arriving, at least within a small corner of Windows 11. Microsoft is promising that you'll be able to use natural language to change aspects of your Windows 11 Settings menu, and Windows will go out and make those changes for you using "agents," or small bits of AI that will work on your behalf -- at least if you own a Copilot PC with an AI-accelerating NPU onboard. Microsoft has begun to use its Surface devices as a showcase for its latest software, and the new 13-inch Surface Laptop and 12-inch Surface Pro are no exception. They'll serve as launch vehicles for Windows Recall, semantic search, and Click-to-Do, but also brand new features like agentic AI and relighting features for Photos, object editing and sticker generation for Paint, and more.
