Reddit Inc. forged a partnership with OpenAI that will bring its content to the chatbot ChatGPT and other products, while also helping the social media company add new artificial intelligence features to its forums. Shares of Reddit, which had their initial public offering in March, jumped as much as 15% in late trading following the announcement. The agreement "will enable OpenAI's AI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics," the companies said Thursday in a joint statement. The deal allows OpenAI to display Reddit's content and train AI systems on its partner's data. Reddit will also offer its users new AI-based tools built on models created by OpenAI, which will place ads on its partner's site.

OpenAI Chief Scientist and co-founder Ilya Sutskever is leaving the artificial intelligence company, a departure that ends months of speculation in Silicon Valley about the future of a top AI researcher who played a key role in the brief ouster of Sam Altman last year. Sutskever will be replaced by Research Director Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI said on its blog Tuesday. In a post on X, Sutskever called trajectory of OpenAI "miraculous" and said that he was confident the company will build AI that is "both safe and beneficial" under its current leadership. The exit removes an executive and renowed researcher who has played a pivotal role in the company since its earliest days, helping guide discussions over the safety of AI technology and at times differing with Altman over strategy. When OpenAI was founded in 2015, he served as its research director after being recruited to join the company by Elon Musk.

Just one week before the world's second-ever global summit on artificial intelligence, protesters of a small but growing movement called "Pause AI" demanded that the world's governments regulate AI companies and freeze the development of new cutting edge artificial intelligence models. They say that the development of these models should only be allowed to continue if companies agree to let them be thoroughly evaluated to test their safety first. Protests took place across thirteen different countries, including the U.S., the U.K, Brazil, Germany, Australia, and Norway on Monday. In London, a group of 20 or so protesters stood outside of the U.K.'s Department of Science, Innovation and Technology chanting things like "stop the race, it's not safe" and "who's future? The protestors say their goal is to get governments to regulate the companies developing frontier AI models, including OpenAI's Chat GPT. They say that companies are not taking enough precautions to make sure their AI models are safe enough to be released into the world. "[AI companies] have proven time and time again… through the way that these companies' workers are treated, with the way that they treat other people's work by literally stealing it and throwing it into their models, They have proven that they cannot be trusted," said Gideon Futerman, an Oxford undergraduate student who gave a speech at the protest. One protester, Tara Steele, a freelance writer who works on blogs and SEO content, said that she had seen the technology impact her own livelihood. "I have noticed since ChatGPT came out, the demand for freelance work has reduced dramatically," she says. "I love writing personally… I've really loved it.

TikTok will begin labeling content created using artificial intelligence when it's been uploaded from outside its own platform in an attempt to combat misinformation. "AI enables incredible creative opportunities, but can confuse or mislead viewers if they don't know content was AI-generated," the company said in a prepared statement Thursday. "Labeling helps make that context clear--which is why we label AIGC made with TikTok AI effects, and have required creators to label realistic AIGC for over a year." TikTok's shift in policy is part of an broader attempt in the technology industry to provide more safeguards for AI usage. In February Meta announced that it was working with industry partners on technical standards that will make it easier to identify images and eventually video and audio generated by artificial intelligence tools.

Researchers at Google DeepMind have developed AlphaFold 3, an AI model that can predict the structure of and interactions between biological molecules including proteins, DNA and RNA, and small molecules that could function as drugs. Google DeepMind will make the model available for non-commercial use through AlphaFold server. The landmark innovation, the details of which were published in the journal Nature on May 8, is likely to dramatically accelerate biological research. "It's a big milestone for us today, announcing AlphaFold 3," said Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, at a briefing on May 7 announcing the breakthrough. "Biology is a dynamic system and you have to understand how properties of biology emerge through the interactions between different molecules in the cell. You can think of AlphaFold 3 as our first big step towards that."

British singer-songwriter FKA twigs, born Tahliah Debrett Barnett, testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property on Tuesday about the dangers of artificial intelligence. She relayed that she was especially concerned as an artist whose music and performances are used by third parties to train artificial intelligence models. She said that the power of this technology has become especially apparent to her as she has attempted to build a deepfake version of herself. "In the past year, I have developed my own deepfake version of myself that is not only trained in my personality, but also can use my exact tone of voice to speak many languages," the singer said in her statement. "I will be engaging my'AI twigs' later this year to extend my reach and handle my online social media interactions, whilst I continue to focus on my art from the comfort and solace of my studio."
