How The Philosophy Of Mind And Consciousness Has Affected AI Research - Liwaiwai

#artificialintelligence

The "brain in a jar" is a thought experiment of a disembodied human brain living in a jar of sustenance. The thought experiment explores human conceptions of reality, mind, and consciousness. This article will explore a metaphysical argument against artificial intelligence on the grounds that a disembodied artificial intelligence, or a "brain" without a body, is incompatible with the nature of intelligence.[1] The brain in a jar is a different inquiry than traditional questions about artificial intelligence. The brain in a jar asks whether thinking requires a thinker.

What's X.AI? Elon Musk plans to create a new AI startup - TechStory

#artificialintelligence

Elon Musk, who has recently voiced fierce opposition to artificial intelligence, appears to be developing something in this area. The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times report that Musk is the founder of the new artificial intelligence business X.AI Corp. The newly formed company has been established in Nevada and specifies Musk as its only director in addition to Jared Birchall, the head of his family's workplaces, as its secretary, according to a regulatory file from last month that sources claimed to have viewed. The multi-company leader is rumored to have a particular fondness for the word "X" and recently rebranded Twitter, Inc. as X Corp. With his present positions as CEO of Tesla and Twitter, Mr. Musk doesn't seem to be planning to slow down.

Avenger Drone Flies Autonomously Using LEO SATCOM Datalink

#artificialintelligence

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (GA-ASI) has flown live, tactical, air combat maneuvers using AI pilots to control a company-owned MQ-20 Avenger UAS. Collaborative maneuvers between human and AI pilots were conducted using GA-ASI's Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) collaborative combat aircraft ecosystem over a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) SATCOM provider's IP-based Mission Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) datalink. The LEO SATCOM connection was also used to rapidly retrain and redeploy AI pilots while the aircraft was airborne, demonstrating GA-ASI's ability to update AI pilots within minutes. This marks the first deployment of an LEO SATCOM provider connections running on an operationally relevant unmanned combat aerial vehicle platform. The team used two L3Harris Technologies RASOR Multi-Functional Processors (MFPs) – one that housed the transceiver card and another that controlled the BVLOS Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA).

Chemical Tunability of Advanced Materials used in the Fabrication of Micro/Nanobots - Journal of Materials Chemistry B (RSC Publishing)

#artificialintelligence

Micro and nanobots (MNBs) are unprecedented in their ability to be chemically tuned for autonomous tasks with enhanced targeting and functionality while maintaining their mobility. Myriad chemical modifications involving a large variety of advanced materials have been demonstrated to be effective in the design of MNBs. Further, they can be controlled for their autonomous motion, and their ability to carry chemical or biological payloads. In addition, MNBs can be modified to achieve targetability with specificity for biological implications. MNBs by virtue of their chemical compositions may be limited by biocompatibility, tissue accumulation, poor biodegradability and toxicity.

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman Says We're Not Training GPT-5 And We Won't For Some Time

#artificialintelligence

During a conversation about potential risks associated with AI systems, Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, confirmed that the organization is not training GPT-5, the anticipated successor to its GPT-4 AI language model, which was released in March. Altman made this statement while speaking at an event held at MIT, where he was asked about an open letter circulated among the tech community. The letter requested that labs such as OpenAI must pause the development of AI systems that are "more powerful than GPT-4" due to concerns about the safety of future systems. However, the letter has been criticized by numerous industry professionals, including some of its signatories. Experts disagree on the level of threat posed by AI, as well as on how the industry can "pause" development in the first place. Altman stated that the letter "lacks most of the technical nuances about where we need the pause" and highlighted that an earlier version of the letter had claimed that OpenAI was currently training GPT-5.
