Life, god, and artificial intelligence

#artificialintelligence

I need to gather my thoughts. I dropped everything to dig into AI a few weeks ago, and it took about ten days for my brain to completely deconstruct. Last week, I could no longer keep up with my own thoughts. I could feel my own neurology overheating in a painful attempt at plasticity, on synapses that turn forty today. If you heard a man in the woods that night yell FUUUUUUUUUCK beneath a full moon, it may have been me, but who knows -- there may be others.

Anthropic's $5B, 4-year plan to take on OpenAI

#artificialintelligence

AI research startup Anthropic aims to raise as much as $5 billion over the next two years to take on rival OpenAI and enter over a dozen major industries, according to company documents obtained by TechCrunch. A pitch deck for Anthropic's Series C fundraising round discloses these and other long-term goals for the company, which was founded in 2020 by former OpenAI researchers. In the deck, Anthropic says that it plans to build a "frontier model" -- tentatively called "Claude-Next" -- 10 times more capable than today's most powerful AI, but that this will require a billion dollars in spending over the next 18 months. When contacted for comment, an Anthropic spokesperson said: "We are planning additional product announcements and will be talking about them soon." The Information reported in early March that Anthropic was seeking to raise $300 million at $4.1 billion valuation, bringing its total raised to $1.3 billion.

The physiologic and molecular changes associated with becoming older raise a person's odds of being sick and dying. Researchers can find ways to lessen the prevalence and severity of diseases by measuring and estimating the biological markers of aging. To distinguish between a person's biological age and their chronological age, scientists have devised "aging clocks" that use biomarkers like blood proteins or DNA methylation to estimate a person's biological age. These aging clocks can estimate the risk of developing an age-related illness. However, due to the need for a blood sample, other methods of locating equivalent measurements may make aging data more accessible.

In October, the White House released a 70-plus-page document called the "Blueprint for an A.I. Bill of Rights." The document's ambition was sweeping. It called for the right for individuals to "opt out" from automated systems in favor of human ones, the right to a clear explanation as to why a given A.I. system made the decision it did, and the right for the public to give input on how A.I. systems are developed and deployed. But if it did become law, it would transform how A.I. systems would need to be devised. And, for that reason, it raises an important set of questions: What does a public vision for A.I. actually look like?

EU: ChatGPT spurs debate about AI regulation โ€“ DW โ€“ 04/15/2023

Garante, the Italian data protection authority, apparently jumped the gun at the end of March when it imposed a temporary ban on ChatGPT, a chatbot that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate texts that seem as if they were created by humans, and computer games. The watchdog was less concerned by the use of AI -- the simulation of human intelligence by computer systems -- than by breaches of data protection legislation. Garante then told the Microsoft Corp-backed company behind ChatGPT, OpenAI, that it would have to be more transparent with its users about how their data were processed. It also said that the US company had to obtain permission from users if their data were to be used to further develop the software -- that is, to help it learn -- and that access to minors had to be filtered. In a press release, the Italian authority said that the ban would be lifted if OpenAI met these conditions by April 30.
