The overall goal of our research is the automatic recognition of the intended message of a grouped bar chart. This paper presents our preliminary work on a system that utilizes the communicative signals in a grouped bar chart as evidence in a Bayesian network that hypothesizes the primary message conveyed by the graphic. The paper discusses the kinds of communicative signals present in grouped bar charts and an ACT-R model for computationalizing one important communicative signal, the relative effort involved in performing the perceptual tasks necessary for the recognition. It also describes our Bayesian network and its implementation on a subset of the kinds of messages that can be conveyed by grouped bar charts.

The Second International Workshop on User Modeling was held March 30- April 1, 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The general chairperson was Dr. Wolfgang Wahlster of the University of Saarbrucken; the program and local arrangements chairperson was Dr. David Chin of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The workshop was sponsored by AAAI and the University of Hawaii, with AAAI providing eight travel stipends for students.

The First International Workshop on User Modeling in Natural Language Dialogue Systems was held 30-31 August 1986 in Maria Laach, West Germany. Issues addressed by the participants included the appropriate contents of a user model, techniques for constructing user models in both understanding and generating natural language dialogue, and the development of general user-modeling systems. This article includes an overview of the presentations made at the workshop. It is a compilation of the author's impressions and observations and is, therefore, undoubtedly incomplete; and at times might fail to accurately represent the views of the researcher presenting the work.
