Visual trick fools AI into thinking a turtle is really a rifle

New Scientist

When is a turtle not a turtle? It sounds like a bad riddle but this is a genuine conundrum for an artificial intelligence trained to identity objects. By subtly tweaking the pattern on the shell of a model turtle researchers were able to trick a neural network into misidentifying the object as a rifle. The results raise concerns about the accuracy of face recognition systems and the safety of driverless cars, for example. This is the latest case of what is known as an "adversarial example".
